Bean played for the Gators from 1972-1975 and helped us win the Natty in 1973. He won 11 times on the PGA tour, came in 2nd in a few majors, and played on a winning Ryder Cup team. He had a double lung transplant six months ago (I didn't even know that was a thing). He was 70 years old.

70 isn’t that old. I remember watching him professionally. He was bigger and thicker than in the posted photo. Always looked intense. I can’t imagine how tough a double lung transplant must’ve been. Rest well, Gator.

Lakeland was proud to claim him. He played at LHS before UF. RIP.
Article said his family bought a Lakeland golf course when they moved down here. Do you know which one? Couldn't have been Heights since it's municipal, maybe Par 3?

I think George Jenkins owned the Par 3. That’s right next to Publix HQ.

Dang is Google effective. I found this SI article about him from 1979. It was Jekyll-Hyde, which I vaguely remember existed but I cannot remember where exactly.
