This is yet another quick, short pass to Powell. The coaches definitely saw something in the Iowa film, because they designed a lot of different ways to get Powell the ball quickly on the left sideline. Appleby throws the ball immediately. This time he doesn't have to decide which receiver is open and the pass is on target. Fullwood is lined up next to Powell and immediately sets up for the block. The Iowa CB is in good position to make the tackle, but Goolsby comes flying across the field and makes a very timely and effective block. Fullwood slips and nearly falls, but manages to get in the way of two defenders. The safety makes the stop, but not before Powell runs between his blockers and picks up 8 yards on 2 and 9. Another well designed and executed play.

This was a 3rd and 1 play. The call is for Scarlett to run behind the right side of the line. The line does not get much push at all and there is simply a pile at the line of scrimmage. Scarlett does a nice job of pushing forward just barely enough to get the first down.

Powell goes in motion and runs out to the left sideline. We have 6 blockers to counter 4 rushers on this play. Scarlett, who seems to have really worked on his attention to blocking, finds the gap in the blocking and fills it. It appears that Sharpe's man is going to beat him, but Sharpe recovers nicely and pushes him out of the play. The middle of the line blocks well. Jawaan Taylor initially appears to be in good position, but then let's his man get by him. Taylor grabs him around the upper torso and slows him down enough for Appleby to escape the pocket. Taylor is very fortunate not to get called for holding on this play. Once Appleby leaves the pocket he is not mobile enough to make a play and waits too long to throw to Callaway. Just before Appleby leaves the pocket Callaway sees what is happening and reverses direction. If Appleby throws the ball to the right hash it's a completion. It's tough to make that split second read and throw while under pressure. This could have been a positive yardage play.

Callaway lines up in the backfield as a running back. As soon as the ball is snapped Callaway runs backwards and to the right sideline. Four receivers run downfield on the right side to set up a wall of blockers. Jawaan Taylor tries to go low to takedown the DE, but misses badly. Appleby throws a lateral back to Callaway who can run or throw. Cleveland stands his man up and pushes him towards the sidelines and out of the play. The other three receivers do not have as much success with their blocks and all of their defenders keep moving towards the play. The play picks up 5 yards and helps set up a future trick play if needed, but if blocked well it could have picked up much more.

We show yet another nonstandard formation featuring Powell in the backfield lined up as a RB. Freddie Swain is also in the backfield split out on the right side. Swain goes into motion coming across the line from right to left. When the ball is snapped Powell immediately runs out on a route across the middle. We have 6 blockers to counter the 5 rushers. Both defensive ends beat the blocks and converge on the QB quickly. The middle of the line blocks well and Appleby has room to step up into the pocket. All of the receivers are open. Callaway gets past his man on a deep route on the right hash. Powell is wide open running across the middle of the field at the first down line. Swain is open in the backfield on the left sideline and Cleveland is open down the middle. Appleby chooses to throw deep to Callaway, but he waits too long to throw the ball and the route runs out of room. The ball is uncatchable and thrown out of bounds. Callaway is clearly frustrated. If Appleby chooses to throw to Powell in the middle of the field we get an easy first down on this play. Powell also looks frustrated as he watches the ball going deep.

Pineiro makes a 43 yard field goal. This guy is a weapon. Amazing kicker.
