The 6-foot-4.5, 284-pound Herbert previously mentioned how crucial it is to have that tight-knit relationship with his future position coach, and there's no doubting that the Wolverines' Tim Drevno completed his mission and pushed all of the right buttons with Scout's 183rd-ranked player overall.
"I originally started talking with him last year, but I didn't think I was going to Michigan at the time," Herbert said. "He started talking to me more a couple of months ago, and we started to develop a pretty good relationship. He wouldn't normally ask me about football, and would ask about school, my family, how I grew up and all of those other things.
"With a coach, I don't only want him to teach me on the field, but I'd like for him to teach me off the field as well. I'm feeling that he can be a great mentor on and off the field."
