How soon before the defense checks out?

as mentioned multiple times, we're 5-11 when the opposing team scores more than 14 points. The defense, although not, "All World Beater" has held the last 2 teams to 17 and 19 points and we've still lost.

We saw it toward the end of Chumps run. The defenses would play great the first 1-2 quarters, see the offense sucks Donkey's dong, and then they'd throw in the towel with the, "What's the point" attitude.

How many more games will they give a full game effort or just go through the motions?

My guess is if they hold UGA for a few drives and the offense does nothing with it they will fold like a lawn chair in the second half and that'll be it.

After our public shaming by UGA it's a wrap. You heard that player say, "we (the defense) always do enough to win" So the fracture has already started.
It's a good that Mac doesn't care about football, only trying their best. Otherwise it would be ugly.
He has coached the team not to care

They can only hold for so long before they break. And they are near that now.

They quit in Mac's first year, no reason to think it won't happen again.

Yep. Except for Arkansas last year, they've pretty much folded in every blowout loss we've had......after they gave a strong effort through 2+ quarters while watching the O go 3 and out...3 and out...turnover....3 and out...etc. If we had 50 starter level players on D then maybe they wouldn't fold, but after getting pounded and doing their job for 2 to 3 quarters they're done.

This offense has led to every one of our blowout losses, except Arkansas (who pretty much beat us from the get go).

It's shameful and Butters puts the blame on the players and publicly calls out the Defensive coaches....meanwhile HIS side of the ball continues to sh*t the bed....

it comes down to if you are on the field for most of the game, the human mind and body is going to give out. Saw this against FSU two years in a row. Why our defense breaks down in the second half of the last two weeks. How long can you keep mentally focused and physically primed when you offense only gives you about a 2 minute rest, while you are having to defend 7 minute drives.

No reason for them to check out. For us to win we have to win by keeping the opposing scoring down due to our lack of offense. That is a cop out for the defense imo.

We had one of the freshest defenses on the field when Muschamp was here as they were on the field for less plays than most every defense in all of FBS.

That has changed under Mac but in our last 4 games only LSU has ran more plays on offense than we have so the defense has no fatigue excuse usually. Looking around college football and the crazy pass happy offenses now most defenses are on the field for more plays than our defense. A good defense should have a goal to win every game the offense scores 14+ points.

I'm saying that by halftime of the UGay game when both of their backs have 100 yds rushing and we are down 21-zip. We won't cross the 50 in the first half.

I could see a defense mentally breaking down in a situation like that where the offense isn't doing much but if the game is still in doubt there is no excuse for a defense to be checking out. We haven't had one game this year where the defense had that situation. Even Michigan never had a double digit lead until there was like a minute and a half left in the game.

I don't view it as checking out, but rather you get tired and make more mistakes. Sure emotion is part of it, but physical issues are the majority. And yes they will be less effective especially with such a low depth.

You ever been on the field playing defense in the situation? If not, you wouldn't understand. That's the whole point of having a demoralizing running game. Remember when we demoralized UGay with our running game? yeah like that.

Yes if we get ran all over it will break a defense down. Muschamp won a few times forcing the running game on the opposing team with the Jumbo package etc. The funny thing this year is our running game has improved quite a bit from last season but the offense as a whole is still really bad.

Yep, like a couple others have said, it's already begun when one of your leaders says "I believe we always do enough to win" in a post game interview.

I believe that Pease is actually better than Nuss. Pease at least tried to find a way to get something out of the offense. Nuss hasn't changed a damn thing that I can see. Maybe our O-line is just that bad, IDK.

Speaking of Defense......

Rewatching the aTm game and seeing this D already checking out TWICE in the 1st wtr alone on twin-crossing patterns in the middle of the field - obviously these guys do not handle/hand off those routes well at all.

Watch the 1&10 with 7:45 left in the 1st and the 3&8 with 4:05 left in the 1st qtr. Chauncey, Joseph and Wilson all cover the slot WR and let other crossing WR free.

Both plays went for 16 and then 30 yd gains.
