This guy has been in the nfl for a long time. Adding another mind like his can only help. I can see him assisting in game prep.

I'm always curious when you see a hire like this (they are scattered all over the SEC) why the guy couldn't find a job in the NFL. He was last coaching in the AAF. To go from an NFL OC to the AAF to an analyst job at UF in 3 years is a pretty hard fall. I'm sure the guy has a lot of knowledge to share, seems like a good hire. Just an observation on the career path.

Well, there is some argument anyway as to whether or not Bengals and Browns count as NFL jobs. That being said, usually staffers have very narrow jobs and dont need to be elite all around coaches. Saban has hired plenty of people who were fired at their last gig.

Based on experience, seems to be a quality hire. What will he be doing?

? the go to guy to fire Mullen's MSU residue friends?
Zampese may want a sabbatical from the big leagues?
Perhaps he's great at overthrowing FF's overthrowing. You know, an accuracy guru?

Probably that and other things offensively that are weighing on DM's time. Time to delegate.

Or time to get a different POV on tape, etc. I doubt that it will actually reduce his work load.

As I think about this, Im struggling to remember any offensive assistants in Mullinz past who has been outside of his own arc of ND associates or former players associated with him.

This could be a big deal. The analysis on Mullinz era receivers has always been that they dont know how to run routes, and QBs dont know how to read defenses. (This is bc the plays are usually one quick, easy read for the QB. It also seems to be a common assessment on many teams now most teams run a spread offense with little or no downfield passing, complicated routes etc.)

It might be nice to have someone on staff w the potential to add the rest of the route tree and add new twists to the offense, develop more passed what the base ND option offense will allow.

The last two seasons the DC at my kids high school was John Thompson who coached at UF in 02 (I think) and was later the DC at USCe. Folks in program told me he decided he didn’t want a college job anymore as he was looking to slow down and liked the idea of teaching HSers. Clearly it wasn’t about money either. I have heard he recently took a consulting job with tinerc. (We all hated to see him go. Ran an awesome defense.). While I have no idea if Zampese wants to get back into coaching, depending on one’s age and financial situation, I could see this type of job being very attractive.

His father, Ernie Zampese, was OC under Don Coryel. That's turning back the dial a bit too far for many posters here.

Let me put it this way. Coryel's passing attack was the equivalent to Spurrier's on steroids.

His dad also one a Super Bowl as OC for the Cowboys in the 90s.

Seems like to be old and stay in today's NFL, you've got to be well connected, well thought of, and have a great track record. The fact that most of his NFL longevity has been with the Bengals could have caused him to be overlooked :dunno:. Don't know the circumstances, but his last stop could have been due to the timing of his departure from the previous position. I'd be surprised if he were here past next season, but hopefully he can add some analytical skills while on board. If he'll free up Mullen and the OC for some extra days to recruit, then he'll be worth what we are paying him.

I think he was under his dad with the Bengals.

Can Analysts work with the players in the Off Season like S&C?
