The Snake followed Broadway Joe at Alabama, but he became one of the great personalities of SEC and NFL football.
"I started my life third and long. I skipped practices. I got kicked off my high school team. I got kicked off my college team. I left pro football in 1969. I've had third and 15 my whole life. Everybody's had rocky moments from day one. But sometimes you pick up third and long and that's where you make your money. That's where the satisfaction comes, from the game and from life."
Sorry to post something negative at his death, but he's been known as a major-league lush around the bill fishing circuit for quite some time. A shame really.
Stabler's drinking antics are the stuff of legend. It's probably fair to say he was either hungover or still buzzed in a fairly high percent of the NFL games he played. And all he did, to borrow the famous Davis line, was win, baby.
I'm trying not to have a hard time with that picture as a Steelers and Gator fan: Two Raiders who were formerly a Seminole and a Bammer.
But I did love watching that southpaw delivery and that great accent.
