My dream in HS was to just get an OFFER to try out at UF. I got the letter in January 1987 from Galen Hall. Come on down and try to make the team!! My career was done at that point. I got a few offers from Troy State, Miss State Gulf Coast, Maryville (next to UT), and such. Could have played about anywhere on the D2 level I believe.
My first game was UF v. UT in 1985. I think Neil Anderson ran in the game winner. I was in the endzone with my HS team to watch it happen. Some of the seniors on that team got sideline passes for that one. We got to practice on the field prior to our game that week. Astroturf sucks. I got to meet several OL that Thursday. They all looked like oak trees at 6'4 280 plus. I was 6'3 215 but carry 260 very well (now). I knew UF was never going to happen.
I say this to make this point. If I was offered a full ride to my dream school, I would still take my visits. I would go to Notre Dame, USCw, LSU, Oklahoma, and UF. I would do unofficials to Auburn and Bama because they were close enough to drive for the weekend. I would want to see those places and make the most informed decision possible.
I would have still signed with UF though.
