The NCAA banned Ole Miss' football team from playing in the postseason again next season, and the Rebels also received additional scholarship deductions in the ruling the university received from the NCAA committee on infractions on Friday, sources told ESPN. Ole Miss had self-imposed a postseason ban for 2017 and scholarship losses in May. Former Rebels coach Hugh Freeze, who resigned for off-field issues in July, also received a suspension and show cause from the NCAA, although the length of the suspension and specifics of the show cause weren't immediately known.

They got off easy, they also lost the lawsuit to Houston Nutt for defamation of character when Freeze and the administration leaked out that all the penalties were under Nutt's tenure to keep the recruiting class. Freeze the public figure and Freeze the reality were two vastly different people. Wonder what it will take for him to get another HC job at a major institution.

Dang. I'm sure Freeze was on UT's coaching search list somewhere...

NCAA spokeswoman Stacey Osborne confirmed to ESPN that Ole Miss seniors will be allowed to transfer without penalty because of the postseason ban for 2018. According to NCAA rules, "It is not necessary for an institution to obtain permission in writing to recruit a student-athlete at an institution that has been placed on probation with sanctions that preclude it from competing in postseason competition during the remaining seasons of the student-athlete's eligibility. However, the student-athlete's institution must be notified of the recruitment and may establish reasonable restrictions related to the contact (e.g., no visits during class time), provided such restrictions do not preclude the opportunity for the student-athlete to discuss transfer possibilities with the other institution."

Sounds like one of the witnesses in the Ole Miss case said Miss State gave him 10k to go there also (which he did). It sounds like it was probably money from a booster so I hope that doesn't come back on Mullen somehow.

The players who could be eligible immediately elsewhere include star defensive end Breeland Speaks, receiver DaMarkus Lodge, and backup quarterback Jordan Ta’amu, who was impressive down the stretch this season.

The players who can’t play immediately elsewhere include quarterback Shea Patterson, receivers A.J. Brown and D.K. Metcalf, and tackle Greg Little. Patterson’s free agency would’ve been a national story if he were a year older, but he’s not eligible for a waiver.
