seems like a sequel could only put them against each other, though that would make interesting choice for the player.

Not sure how big of a game they could make a prequel though, seems like it would be limited

They have a whole 20 years of Joel's life they could show. Different friendships that went sour or were lost.

Seeing Joel vs Ellie would be a horrible thing to do. They would lose a lot of fans.

She knows he lied, you could tell at the end when she asked him if he was telling the truth. She is willing to stay for him, so making them fight over it makes no sense.

I get what you are saying, and maybe fight is a strong word. I was thinking more along the lines of a break up of sorts and then a coming back together.

seems like including his brothers compound would be easy to include again too.

Yes, it is possible to make a sequel, but I believe it would ruin the great story told in the first game. A prequel has plenty of options, you could even play as other people besides Joel. Like the leader of the Fireflies are someone like that.
