Wow...I enjoyed his writing and his contributions to HBO Real Sports

"His wit always was on display. Among Deford's gems: "I believe that professional wrestling is clean and everything else in the world is fixed."

And he understood why the games have such a hold on so many.

"To see the glory in sport, where somebody comes from behind and does something, sinks a shot in the last second or throws a touchdown pass or hits a home run, there is a beauty in that, and at the end of the day, that's why we love sports more than anything else," he said.

Before there was the net, there was Frank Deford being outstanding on a regular basis for SI, which halfway explains why so few people here know who he was. I'll tell you who he was. He was as good as it gets. RIP.

He was one of the best. Rick Reilly did a great job succeeding him. Too bad there's no one carrying the mantle in this day.

I remember reading that article when it first came out. Here is another interesting part of the story.

What an interesting footnote to the writing of that story. Here is a link to SI's best of Frank Deford:

https://www.si.com/2017/05/29/best-frank-deford-stories

including "The Toughest Coach There Ever Was."

The reason there are few like him now is that there are no editors now. There are people pushing political agenda so to them what matters is does the story further the agenda or narrative not is it a well written interesting story.
