Ten stats that stick out through five weeks of college football

https://theathletic.com/116486/2017...-five-weeks-of-college-football/?source=email

We’ve reached October, and most college football teams have played at least four games, so we’ve got an idea of what teams across the country look like.

Each week, we look at some of the most interesting statistics from the weekend. But with five-plus weeks behind us, here are some numbers that stand out among season-long stats.

Florida State is allowing 10.3 tackles for loss per game, the most in the country.

Last week against Wake Forest, the Seminoles allowed 17 tackles for loss. The FSU offensive line was a major question mark coming into the season, and injuries have made things even more difficult. Florida State is also allowing four sacks per game, fourth-most nationally.

Stanford’s Bryce Love has out-rushed 120 FBS teams by himself.

Love’s 1,088 rushing yards in five games would rank No. 21 as a team (Stanford ranks No. 8). His 217.6 yards per game on the ground would rank No. 30. Love also has seven runs of at least 50 yards. Only Notre Dame has as many as a team, and the next closest is Tulsa with five.

SMU is the most improved scoring offense so far this season, and Middle Tennessee has seen the largest decrease.

The Mustangs are scoring 48.2 points per game, up 20.5 points per game from a year ago. The next most improved scoring offenses are West Virginia (up 17.6 ppg), UCF (up 17.5 ppg), Louisiana Lafayette (up 17.4 ppg) and TCU (up 16.8 ppg).

On the other side, Middle Tennessee’s 16.6 points per game are 23.1 fewer per game than in 2016. The next largest decreases are Western Kentucky (down 22.2 ppg), Old Dominion (down 17.3 ppg), Florida State (down 17.1 ppg) and BYU (down 16.9 ppg).

Purdue has the most improved scoring defense in the country.

The Boilermakers, under first-year head coach Jeff Brohm and defensive coordinator Nick Holt, are allowing 21.8 points per game, which is a 16.5 per game decrease from last year. Other top scoring defense improvements include Penn State (down 16 ppg), Arizona (down 16 ppg), Oregon (down 15.4 ppg), Georgia (down 14.8 ppg) and Cal (down 14.4 ppg).

Louisiana Lafayette has the largest scoring defense increase, allowing 53.8 points per game, which is 28.5 per game more than 2016. After the Ragin Cajuns are Oregon State (up 15.9 ppg), East Carolina (up 14.5 ppg), Georgia Southern (up 11.8 ppg), UCLA (up 11.7 ppg) and Temple (up 10.8 ppg).

South Florida’s defense has at least two interceptions in every game this year.

Through five games, the Bulls have 14 interceptions and 16 takeaways, both of which lead the nation. They intercepted three passes against San Jose State and Illinois and recorded four against Temple. First-year defensive coordinator Brian Jean-Mary has USF allowing 20 points per game, down from 31.6 last year, and they’re No. 2 nationally in rush defense at 2.35 yards per carry allowed.

Alabama is the only team in the country without a turnover this season.

The Tide is also No. 37 in total offensive plays and average 70.8 plays per game. Quarterback Jalen Hurts threw nine interceptions last year, on 25.4 passes per game. This year, Hurts has no interceptions, but has only thrown 17.5 passes per game, as most games have been blowouts. The Tide hasn’t turned the ball over since last year’s Iron Bowl, making it six consecutive games without a turnover. On the other end of the spectrum, San Jose State has 20 turnovers in six games this year.

East Carolina’s defense has allowed seven plays of at least 70 yards, in five games.

The next closest team is Tulsa at five such plays, and no other team has more than three. The Pirates are allowing 50.6 points per game, No. 129 in the FBS. Head coach Scottie Montgomery reassigned defensive coordinator Kenwick Thompson to a non-coaching role earlier this season in an attempt to fix the defense.

Syracuse has the top two receivers in total catches this season.

Steve Ishmael leads the nation with 51 catches, and Ervin Philips is right behind with 44 catches. Syracuse’s 85 plays per game are No. 3 nationally, and its 46.8 pass attempts per game are No. 5.

Arkansas is the only team in the FBS without a made field goal.

The Hogs have only attempted two on the year, missing both. But Arkansas doesn’t have the fewest field goal attempts. That belongs to Tulane and UTEP, who have each attempted only one field goal, both making it. Also notably, Penn State is 5-for-11 on field goals this season, and South Carolina is 3-for-11.

Baker Mayfield set an FBS record for passer rating last season, and he’s well ahead of that in 2017.

In 2016, Mayfield’s passer rating was 196.38, breaking Russell Wilson’s 2011 record of 191.78. This season? Mayfield’s rating is 228.25. The schedule hasn’t been very difficult, but it did include a trip to Ohio State, and he lost several weapons from last year. Mayfield’s 332.3 passing yards per game are No. 9 nationally, his 13.2 yards per attempt is No. 1, and he has yet to throw an interception.

The new OC this year that has QBs throw for over 4,000 yards most years and playing 3 of the worst teams in all of football - FBS and FCS? The QB WV had last year was a gamer that ran the ball quite a bit for a passing type team and had them one Oklahoma win away from winning the Big 12. Lets see if Grier can come close to that.
