The "next Clemson" (similar type program that could rise)

Just something to talk about in the off-season. Stewart Mandel's mailbag from The Athletic (if you have a membership you can check it out); he was asked "what moderately successful school has the potential, with the right coach, to make the leap, joining the ’Bamas, Ohio States and now the Clemsons?"

Mandel's answer: Texas A&M

"But the obvious answer is Texas A&M. Its DNA actually bears a lot of similarities to Clemson’s — big stadium, rabid fan base, fat-cat boosters but very little to show for it historically. (A&M owns one national title, just as Clemson did prior to 2016.) Lord knows they’ve got the resources and fertile recruiting territory, and now they’ve got a national championship coach. I don’t know if it’s going to happen, but all the necessary prerequisites are there.

Just don’t expect the first trophy to come next season, when Jimbo Fisher’s team plays at Clemson, at Georgia, at LSU and vs. Alabama."

If Jimbo keeps recruiting top 5 classes AND lands a great QB?? Thoughts?

He’s Jimbo, good for at least one stupid loss each year, he was the Richt of the ACC, not worried that he is in the SEC.

I was going to say Texas or us. But Jimbo can't be overlooked.

Isn't that what they said when he was at FSU? If anything, they'll get in trouble with the NCAA and he will get fired or move on to the NFL.

Timing is bad with Texas appearing to be on the upswing.

Klimpson doesn't have to compete with an in-state alpha school (no disrespect to USCe but c'mon).

Texas kids don't grow up dreaming of playing for aTm, they grow up dreaming of playing for Texas. That's hard to overcome.

There is enough talent in the area (look how well TCU and Baylor have done recently) to support a really, really good aTm team but not a consistently dominant program like 'Bama or Klimpson.

The two teams in the SEC with limited success who SHOULD be consistently better are Arkansas and Mizzou. I said "consistently better", not competing for a national championship. But back to the question.

A team that could rise to the Klimpson level would be UGA. It looks like things are starting to fall apart over there (thank God) but UGA looks a lot like Klimpson before Dabo. One MNC in 1980 (Klimpson had one in 1981). Fertile recruiting grounds, the big dog in their home state, lots of fans and money...it has all the pieces. The only difference is UGA has a tougher path to the top than Klimpson (but certainly no tougher than aTm). Honestly, the only reason the author would have picked aTm over UGA is because of UGA's delusions of grandeur. They think they are an elite, storied program but in reality haven't done much since Donald Trump's New Jersey Generals drafted Herschel Walker to play in the USFL.

And for the record, fcuk aTm and fcuk UGA. And fcuk Jimbo and Kirby and Klimpson and Dabo for that matter. Fcuk 'em all.

The only team I care about rising to that level is FLORIDA.

Take away the two years with Winston... Jimbo is a four loss coach while having the top 5 talent in the nation. He played only two games every year where the opponent had similar or better talent.

Even with his 2nd season with Rapeis, there were at least 3-4 games they could have lost in 2014 not including the Oregon loss.

As Douglas pointed out, Jimbo barely squeaked by, Rapeis saved him. He saw the writing on the wall with Clemson and Dabo.. so he bales out to the SEC west where having 2-3 losses every year can be excused, because it’s the SEC!!

There is no way he gets that program to that level as suggested in the article, no way he wins the SEC 4 straight years, much less the West, so those yearly losses, coupled with not having a top 5 recruiting class consistently will doom Texas A&M to eternal wannabe status.

Rapeis had several blind luck plays that prevented defeat.

LSU, with the right coach. The talent is there. The loyalty is there. The fan base and money are there. Just need a dynamic recruiter with an exciting offense and appreciation for defense. Would be very scary.

One stupid loss? He was a four loss coach without Rapeis.... in the ACC.

They are hiring staff by the hundreds and have built facilities to rival Bammer, OSU and Clempson.

They did have the top defense that year I think. I expect them to be a legit SEC contender by 2020 probably.

Jimbos only chance is for there to be a 2007 type season where everyone drops the ball on being elite. Jimbo is a subpar coach through and through and a scumbag to boot.
