So it is one game suspension time for UF player yet again. Many don't think this is much of a punishment as UF starts with a pretty easy opponent most year. However for players at "stat" position like offensive skill players one game no matter who it is against can be a big deal.
Consider the case of Edie George and Darnell Autry in 1995. Many will know that George won the Heisman that year and of course went on to a very good NFL career. Autry was another RB that year from Northwestern. In the 1995 season George gained 1927 yards rushing from scrimmage while Autry gained 1785 yards rushing from scrimmage. So it seems like it is pretty easy to see why George won the Heisman while Autry finished 4th in the voting.
Of course there are other ways to look at this and it turns out that George gained 148.23 yards per game while Autry gained 148.75 yards per game. You see OSU and George played 13 games that year while Autry and Northwestern played 12 games that year. [These stats include the bowl number but if you take them out you get slightly more yards per game for both players, but the same basic standing.] Of course George was the bigger name, Ohio State the bigger name school, George had fewer attemps and thus a better yards per carry stat so there are other reasons than just the extra game, but as I remember at the time total yards different was big edge George had over Autry.
Still while Autry had rushing yards per game numbers as good as George and his Northwestern team won the Big 10, his totals were not as great because he played one less game and he did not win the Heisman, George did. This is a cautionary tale for any UF player playing a "stat" position getting suspended for an easy game like UMass. Stat totals matter and when they get themselves suspended over stupid things they can hurt their career while UF is not affect much at all. It is also cautionary to those who think a suspension for UMass is not that big a deal, one game can matter for a player.
