UF's One Game Suspensions Might Mean More Than You Think

So it is one game suspension time for UF player yet again. Many don't think this is much of a punishment as UF starts with a pretty easy opponent most year. However for players at "stat" position like offensive skill players one game no matter who it is against can be a big deal.

Consider the case of Edie George and Darnell Autry in 1995. Many will know that George won the Heisman that year and of course went on to a very good NFL career. Autry was another RB that year from Northwestern. In the 1995 season George gained 1927 yards rushing from scrimmage while Autry gained 1785 yards rushing from scrimmage. So it seems like it is pretty easy to see why George won the Heisman while Autry finished 4th in the voting.

Of course there are other ways to look at this and it turns out that George gained 148.23 yards per game while Autry gained 148.75 yards per game. You see OSU and George played 13 games that year while Autry and Northwestern played 12 games that year. [These stats include the bowl number but if you take them out you get slightly more yards per game for both players, but the same basic standing.] Of course George was the bigger name, Ohio State the bigger name school, George had fewer attemps and thus a better yards per carry stat so there are other reasons than just the extra game, but as I remember at the time total yards different was big edge George had over Autry.

Still while Autry had rushing yards per game numbers as good as George and his Northwestern team won the Big 10, his totals were not as great because he played one less game and he did not win the Heisman, George did. This is a cautionary tale for any UF player playing a "stat" position getting suspended for an easy game like UMass. Stat totals matter and when they get themselves suspended over stupid things they can hurt their career while UF is not affect much at all. It is also cautionary to those who think a suspension for UMass is not that big a deal, one game can matter for a player.

True but this is a year I doubt that would come into play for our skill players. Callaway is about the only skill player I think that might end up on the All - SEC team at the end of the season. It is boneheaded for players to get suspended like that however.

Well, we do know who the better RB was, right?
The voters nailed it.

Heh.......For one I don't give a flip if any of our players ever win a Heisman again....As a Gator fan give me a TEAM that hoist multiple trophy's per season and a bunch of players who want to be part of it......

We have had a heisman player on all three of our NC teams. I'll take another please.

Generally, missing game 1 is detrimental for anyone who sits because he doesn't get continuity with the team before a relatively big game 2. Especially for the freshman.

I'll bet your $1000 in sportsbook cash we don't have a player in the top 10 in the Heisman voting this year so the suspensions of ANY player on our roster doesn't matter. But if you think one of the 2 freshman WRs or any of the other 3 players have a chance to win a Heisman....well, you're high. Not really sure of the meaning of this thread except to tell us about 2 football players from Big 10 schools that most of us really don't care about....

Sorry, $250 is the maximum single bet.

I think all stat position players want to build up their stats as much as possible. All RB want to gain 1,000 yards. All WRs want 1,000 yards of catches etc. So while the Heisman case is an extreme example, I think UF coaches should pound this issue all off season particularly for players seeking 1,000 yard seasons or 100 tackles or etc.

This suspension could keep Tabor from accumulating the stats needed to win any post season DB awards.

Suspend Trask for the first game and he's a shoe-in for Heisman.

Don't forget the opportunities for highlight-reel material.
