Very interesting:

Where every FBS head coach was 10 years ago

http://coachingsearch.com/article?a=Where-every-FBS-head-coach-was-10-years-ago-2017

What’s the path to becoming a head coach? There’s no one way to go, and no set amount of time it takes.

CoachingSearch took a look at all 130 FBS head coaches and where they were 10 years ago. First, here's the data:

Of the 130 head coaches, 50 were head coaches 10 years ago. Of those…

- 13 are still in the same job: Bob Stoops, Mike Gundy, Gary Patterson, Kirk Ferentz, Mark Dantonio, Pat Fitzgerald, Kyle Whittingham, Nick Saban, Frank Solich, David Bailiff, Rick Stockstill, Bobby Wilder and Troy Calhoun. (Randy Edsall is back at UConn after stops in between)

- 4 were high school coaches: Chad Morris, Mike Jinks, Tony Sanchez, Bill Clark

- 3 were NFL head coaches: Bobby Petrino, Lane Kiffin, Lovie Smith

- 9 were non-FBS college head coaches: Dave Clawson, Willie Fritz, Lance Leipold, Chris Creighton, Chuck Martin, Craig Bohl, Mark Hudspeth, Joey Jones and Matt Viator

- 1 was an Arena League head coach: Mike Neu

But most in this group weren’t head coaches. In fact, two of today’s coaches were still players. Kliff Kingsbury was playing in the CFL, while Nick Rolovich was playing in the Arena Football League and also coaching in the offseason.

Four were out of coaching altogether. Terry Bowden and Bob Davie were TV analysts, Joe Moglia was the CEO of TD Ameritrade, and Bill Snyder was retired.

Two were in off-field roles: Barry Odom was Missouri’s DFO, and Geoff Collins was Alabama’s director of player personnel.

One coach was a graduate assistant: Mike Norvell.

Five were on the Stanford staff. It was Jim Harbaugh’s first season, and David Shaw, Willie Taggart, D.J. Durkin and Mike Sanford were on the staff.

Five were on the Florida staff one year removed from the national title: Urban Meyer, Steve Addazio, Dan Mullen, Charlie Strong and Doc Holliday.

Two coaches were at Wabash (IN): Chris Creighton was the head coach, and Tom Allen was an assistant.

Paul Johnson had been at GT less than 10 yrs, seems longer

LOL @ Bill Snyder = Retired

How about Wabash producing two D1 coaches? That's impressive!

Hard to believe Saban is the only SEC coach still around. I don't count LSU's coach due to the break.

Of the 119 coaches…

- 53 are out of coaching today. The latest being Bob Stoops after his retirement on Wednesday. Stoops had been the longest-tenured head coach in FBS.

- 11 are still in the same role: Mike Gundy, Gary Patterson, Kirk Ferentz, Mark Dantonio, Pat Fitzgerald, Kyle Whittingham, Nick Saban, Frank Solich, David Bailiff, Rick Stockstill and Troy Calhoun. (Randy Edsall is also still at UConn, but with stops in between. Bobby Wilder is still the Old Dominion coach, but ODU wasn’t FBS at the time).

- 25 are head coaches at a new school today — Dan Hawkins the only one in FCS.

- 1 is an NFL head coach: Pete Carroll. Seven others are NFL assistants: Ron Prince, Bill Callahan, Ron Zook, Karl Dorrell, Sylvester Croom, Al Golden and Derek Dooley.

- 1 coach is in Italy. Chris Ault recently won the Italian Bowl.

- 1 is a university president: Jim Tressel at Youngstown State.

- 3 are now high school coaches: Jeff Jagodzinski, Bill Cubit and Todd Dodge
