With players opting out of Bowl games, is it time for an expanded playoff?

Really?

About as good as Dominion Voting machines...can you say OSU?...That's fair.

If I'm wrong justify playing 6 Games and being ranked?

Explain how ND gets a shot?

Yeah...gotta love the BCS...but hey its 2020...nothing is fair.

Something's going to change and we'll likely see an expanded playoff, for two reasons. First, there'd be a poop ton of money involved, and these decisions are always driven by moolah. And secondly, the playoff has wrecked the other bowl games - or at least diminished their importance to the point of irrelevancy.

I don't know what the answer is, but whatever these d!psh!ts do, it had better not dilute the importance of the regular season. One of the beautiful aspects of college football is the outsized importance the regular season has with regard to determining a team's season. Even losing one game can dash hopes. There is a tension, even early on, like when we play the Chuggers, and there is some beauty in that. Compare that to the NCAA hoops tourney where you can finish 7th in your conference and still make it in. Dreadful.

I think we'll see some version of all the P5 champs making a playoff, plus one G5 then maybe two wildcards for an 8 team playoff. While I am leery on the surface, I'd be willing to give this a whirl. I'd also like to see a return to computer rankings determining the field. The committee is biased and they really spit the bit this year by picking the Bucknuts over aTm.

How this would resuscitate the other bowls, I have no idea.

no, it means the playoff concept was a giant fail so instead of doubling down on what is clearly doing more harm then good, for once in this country's existence, lets do the RIGHT thing and revert back to what worked pretty well, always seemed to result in the best team being crowned, and maximized the prestige and importance of the regular season, conf title games, and the bowls.

Stop this stupid playoff and bring back the BCS. It wasnt perfect but it was FAR better than this stupid system we have now.
Couldn’t agree with this more.

You can't be a Florida fan and want an expanded playoffs.

What you are is a fan of shytty football teams.
Dan Mullinz cant win one game against an elite football team. Imagine having to winnthe SECG and THEN win four more in a row.

It will simply enforce the status quo with the teams with the deepest rosters winning even more.

Also imagine your shot at a NC if you had somehow an elite coach and DC and some #8 Cincinnati or BYU player took out your star player on a late hit.

Can't agree more.
Florida plays FSU and, God willing, the SEC championship game. That's our playoffs. We win those two we're gonna be 1 or 2 every ****ing year. Why the fuk would we want to have to play shytty playoff games?

The playoffs have already diluted the regular season. Now, the Bama’s, Clemson’s and Ohio St.’s of the world can drop a game but still get in if they win their conference title game. That didn’t used to be the case. Going to 8 teams, will mean two loss teams will routinely get in. That will take a ton of juice out of the regular season.

Coaches could and should just sitout late games, just like the morons in the NFL.

You can argue the specifics, but heck yes go to an extended playoff system. College basketball, baseball, software, volleyball, etc. use a playoff/tournament system. All the pro leagues do. Division 2 runs a playoff system. But somehow it's bad for Division 1? I don't care abpit tje impact to the bowl games. And I don't want some pool of voters applying the eye test to determine the Division 1 champion. Win or lose it on the field.

As you can see its the old farts that are opposed to change. Shocking development. Should have had a 6 or 8 team playoff this year since the schedules were so different just to see how it works as a test run.

they do win and lose it on the field.

you just don't get to lose two and the regular season and hope someone gives you a pretend championship.

Use the BCS formula. It worked fine. No human intervention.
well humans made the polls (AP and Coaches?) which were part of BCS and humans made the formulas and decided how important strength of schedule and margin of victory were.... but I know what you mean.

if it were up to me, I were king, I would allow all undefeated or one loss champions to fight for the national championship.

some years that might be two, some years it might be three or four.

All these teams sat home for the championship game or the two or three loss teams need not apply.

you just have a preset of brackets.

3 teams? #1 gets a bye

5 teams? rare but the two lowest ranked get a playin game.

that way the teams with a legitimate argument still get their chance and all the regular season game still matter, like it's supposed to in college football.

if for some reason there was only one team that qualified, I'd let the highest ranked two loss champion play #1.

Pitts, Toney and Grimes are all opting out of the "Meaningless" Cotton Bowl...Is it time for an expanded play-off?

I know many hate the idea but I'd like:

  • 6 Power Conferences with mandatory play-offs
  • 4 at large teams play 2 wild card play-offs
  • That's 8 Play-Off Games
  • 2 Semi's
  • 1 NC
  • That's 11 meaningful Bowl Games

No, it’s not.

As a matter of fact, it’s time to go back to the BCS era, #1 vs. #2. We’re struggling to find a 3rd & 4th worthy team this year (pretty much the same as every other year). If we can’t find 4 worthy teams to fill the 4 team playoff, what makes you think we’ll be able to find 8 worthy teams if we expand like you propose?
