In order to gauge progress you need to know your starting point. Where are we today, right now?

If we were to go into 2022 with these players as they are, what would you expect, another sub-.500 season?

What do you expect has already changed and can/will change and how will all of that affect 2022?

Believe it or not, after the bowl game, Im feeling better about the defense going into next year. Lots of young guys looked good here and there. I take the game with a grain of salt seeing that we only practiced 4 times by a skeleton coaching staff who knew they were jobless.

Offense, got no clue. EJ was just so bad. Receivers dropped a lot of balls. It was just so obvious that they didnt prepare at all for the game. Peirce and Davis looked good and didn't really get to see any youth much on that side of the ball.

I want the culture to change,, the belief that beating jawja, fsucks, and winning the division are the goals, No more moral victories, "we're 7 points from being where we want to be" ,

Very limited penalties, show discipline and that the team practiced

Come out prepared,, i think mullet started every game the least prepared of any coach that i can recall watching

run up the damn score,, then put the backups in to get experience and help sell early playing time

Hard to tell what the 22 will look like. New head Coach, new position coaches, new system.
I think it safe to say Fl. will be fundamentally a better team. I still believe it will take 2-3 recruiting cycles to get near the talent level of ga- bama

Like an aircraft carrier, it take a long time to turnaround the $hit $hiw we’ve experienced since Tebow left.

I think we’ll find a team that plays better than the individual talent that makes up that team. But it won’t be enough for a memorable season.

There’s going to be lumps in the immediate future, but the future looks bright (even if it’s going to be RUINED by NIL semi-pro college ball. :gah:)

I go back in order to think forward. 1980. We were coming off the 0-10-1 season. Pell brought in one of the great recruiting hauls of his career — which included the highly rated quarterback trio of Wayne Peace, Roger Sibald and Dale Dorminey — and we went 8-4 with a bowl win. It was brick by brick then and it’ll be similar going forward. Pell also had a sharp young OC named Mike Shanahan.

Just recruit and recruit some more. It’ll happen in due time.

I hate to even say this, but if we use Ugay as the model, I think that’s a fair deal. Bangz is a pretty mediocre coach, but he’s one hell of a recruiter. The jury is out on Sling Blade’s coaching acumen at a big school in the SEC, but if he can at least recruit like Kirby has, we will be back in the hunt sooner rather than later.

7-5 or 8-4 I think are respectable records next season, as long as we look somewhat competent on the field. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to go undefeated and win it all, but it’s not happening.

In retrospect, Pell wasn’t an outstanding coach either. What he was, was a very good CEO. It took Hall’s touch to elevate the team to elite status upon Pell’s ouster in ‘84. Just like Miami with Butch Davis and Larry Coker, the latter wasn’t nearly the recruiter. Slowly but surely, the cupboard ran dry.

I dont think this question should be asked until at least spring, we don't even know the whole coaching staff, what transfers we are going to get, anyone else we pick up on signing day, who might transfer out. Sooo many variables. I guess you could just say we are going to lose them all, that way we will be pleasantly surprised?

And you could feel the sea change despite 0-10-1.

There were 4 QBs in that class- you omitted Mark Massey - and as I recall they were top 4 QBs in the state. We got Peace because Bama wanted him to play FB.

Heck of a bump class. It included:

Randy Clark, Back (6-0, 185), Venice
Dwayne Dixon, Back (6-2, 197), Alachua (Santa Fe)
Dale Dorminey, Quarterback (6-1, 188), Hialeah
Gary Ellis, Line (6-6, 245), Frostproof
Lorenzo Hampton, Back (6-0, 185), Lake Wales
Roy Harris, Line (6-4, 245), Winter Garden (West Orange)
John Hunt, Line (6-4, 240), Orlando (Edgewater)
Charlie Kerr, Back (6-5, 215), Tampa (Plant)
Tony Lilly, Back (6-0, 190), Woodbridge, Va. (Woodbridge)
Wilber Marshall, Back (6-2, 227), Titusville (Astronaut)
Mark Massey, Quarterback (6-1, 180), Pensacola
Fred McCallister, Back (6-1, 220), Melbourne (Palm Bay)
Vito McKeever, Back (5-11, 175), Dunnellon
Wayne Peace, Quarterback (6-2, 205), Lakeland
Buddy Schultheis, Line (6-2, 250), Naples
Roger Sibbald, Quarterback (6-0, 190), Dunnellon

Who remembers Wayne peace to James Jones in 82 to beat Miami in the closing mins.
One handed stab and just made it across the goal line.

Me. I was two. My parent say I was so excited I peed in my pants and then conked out for an afternoon nap. Crazy times.
