We've heard these conversations before:

Napier: "Dean!"
Dean: "Yeah coach?"
Napier: "You're hurt, you have a lower body injury."
Dean: "I do?"
Napier: "Yup. I have a feeling it's going to linger for some time."
Maybe Napier has attended your mind re-education camp. Ox are you holding out on us? It could have also ended like this.

Dean: "Really Coach, well you know I felt that I tweaked something on that play I got my azz burnt, ya feel me?"
Napier: "I sure do. You go see the trainers and follow that process. It may last til December."

I wish the kid well but it’s time to build for the future! He’s a 5th year senior making rookie mistakes that cost us the game against an SEC opponent. We may as well play the youngsters, let them take their lumps, gain some valuable experience, and start paving the road for future Gator glory

To further emphasize your point, Trey Dean is actually a SIXTH year senior due to the free Covid year.
What would could have possibly convinced him or the coaching staff that his return would be good for either party? He’s been here since the Butters era.

So - other sites are reporting the reason he got so much leeway this year is because the coaching staff worked him hard to keep him on the team this year. Mainly because they weren’t sure what they had at safety. By the time we got to the summer they realized that the younger players were better but they basically had stopped him from going anywhere else so they wanted to give him a fair shot at the position. They were worried (because of Dean’s locker room presence) that if they benched him in favor of a younger kid they would have locker room problems.

Feelings have shifted considerably in the locker room now because of Dean’s play.

In other words, “we love you but you suck”.

Not that it matters because he still stinks in his play, but isn't he a 5th year senior? Just looking at the roster it shows as a 5th year senior.

Somehow this seems to be right out of Cousin Eddie's playbook on who gets to play? Page 1: Age, Seniority. Last Page: Are you any good?

Mullen would have stuck with Dean for the full season and made him a team captain.

Let's get this cat to replace him. The cat's form is amazing.

This reminds me of baseball when a pitcher has 2 or 3 bad starts in a row and suddenly goes on the IL with "arm fatigue" or "shoulder stiffness"

I view this as a good opportunity for the younger guys to gain some experience and learn before they are really tested against LSU.
