He is a legitimate dual threat QB, so, yes, he is immediately the starter.

That would really piss off the Suckeyes.

I hope it happens for that reason alone.

Sounds like Dean has done very well and is one of the newbies who is living up to the billing. Might be an option at corner if we lose a starting CB. he can go at either safety or CB and likes press coverage duels.

I’ve seen a number of posts about it “sounding” like Dean is doing great (in part because he’s moved up to second string by default since the rest of our cb depth is dreadful), but go look at the links of how well Grimes is doing and watch who he is consistently torching. Poor Dean is abused and Grimes gets open by 5 plus yards on the clips where he’s covered by Dean. Imagine how bad the 3rd stringers (Burnett and crew) would look if Dean is a highlight reel and quickly stole their spots.

But, he is supposed to still be in HS right now so maybe it’s relative and he’ll adjust quickly. He did look good during the all-star practices and game against kids his own age.

In honor of one of our current starters at DE, Luke Ancrum, here's an article from the past. Them 2 star gems. Thanks McNuss.

Florida football recruiting: Sleeper DE Luke Ancrum commits to Gators

https://www.alligatorarmy.com/2015/2/1/7960033/luke-ancrum-commits-florida-gators-football-recruiting

Sometimes, commitments happen when you least expect it: Minutes after Inside The Gators's lake Alderman tweeted that Sebring defensive end Luke Ancrum had Florida "on the top" after an official visit this weekend, but would not commit until National Signing Day, Gator Country's Andrew Spivey tweeted that Ancrum had, indeed, committed to the Gators.

Can't sleep for even a second on this beat.

Ancrum, though, is a rather deep sleeper: He doesn't even have an evaluation from 247Sports, is rated a two-star prospect by Rivals and Scout, and earns his lone three-star rating from ESPN. And in his highlights, it's pretty clear why:

Ancrum is consistently listed at 6'5" and 230 pounds by ESPN, 247, and Rivals, but checks in at 6'4" and 220 pounds on Scout — and yet 6'5" and 220 seems more accurate than any of those measurements, given the gangly defender who lines up inside far too often for Sebring. Ancrum's not particularly powerful inside, and lacks great burst, though he does seem to accelerate around offensive tackles when lined up at end.

He's a project, to be frank, and his offer list — on which Wisconsin and Pittsburgh stand out, and Florida International gives Florida yet more #GetSomeFIU bragging rights — is a bit sparse, and a bit concerning once you know that his offers from Wisconsin and Pittsburgh came last spring.

So he's a player who has some potential, but needs to add weight, and comes in as a project on the defensive line ... plus, he didn't blow up this fall, despite FBS offers, so it's not like he was choosing Florida over other big-name schools when it came down to brass tacks.

here's hoping davis and henderson stay healthy. any emergency that called on Dean or Edwards to step in would hopefully come well after fall practice and well into the season.

like it or not, we're needing some of these new faces to get salty real quick. Emory, Bleich, Dean, Edwards, etc.

they've got talent, but at the moment they're raw. it is what it is.....

Ackerman says Grantham has us back to "elite level" defense. Bold. Hope the fellas live up to the hype.

Says the RBs are great. Need Grimes and Jefferson, badly.

Franks's low football IQ is going to put Mullen in an uncomfortable situation: play Trask or throw Emory into the deep end.

Better keep an eye on that QB who may transfer from OSU.....

That would really piss off the Suckeyes.

I hope it happens for that reason alone.

Barrow is talented, correct? Also not mentally broken? Those facts would give him a leg up on his current competition here.

Nice article. Dude makes his reads and finds the mismatch, a huge component of Dan's scheme.

With good RBs, we don't necessarily need him to be the breakaway guy the other two OSU QB candidates seem to be.

This situation bears watching. We could slap a redshirt on Emory and still get Dan's machine rolling.

Here’s the problem though. He’s not coming here. Because what’s going to happen is that Meyer will name him the starting QB. Just to keep him until the summer so he cannot transfer. He’ll then be forced to ride the bench to give Meyer depth on the team.

yeah, Creyer is going to be coy and string the kid out. maybe Burrow will see thru his BS and make him cardial.

Idk. Meyer has said they will talk about it with Burrow and make the right decision for him. Would be kind f’d up to take his last opportunity like this just to lie to him.

Creyer’s responsible to the program first. Keeping the kid around is what is best for the program, even if it sucks for the kid. You’d hope that he would be upfront with Burrow but he wouldn’t be wrong not to.

I've been following this kid since before January. He's transferring. The 1% chance he stays is if Meyer gets cute....but even Meyer has conceded the kid is leaving. He's said something along the lines of, "...sure, we'd love Joe to stay, but he has to do what's best for him....and we'll help him any way we can."

If he was going to be a redshirt senior, I'd think he might stay. But he's going to be a grad-transfer w/ 2 years of eligibility that can play immediately. "He Gone!"

Now, it just remains to be seen where he goes. The reason the UF writers are talking about him is because there is buzz about this news (i.e. they've heard from someone w/ the team that this possibly could happen). We'll see. If he comes this will be huge. We could see 3 QBs transfer within a year, giving us the two Jones' on next year's roster w/ Burrow as a redshirt senior....all three being legit DT QBs.

Honestly, this concerns me (him being a starter)...BUT, I will give credit where credit is due for him working hard and EARNING his spot. This is a new coaching staff and they have no loyalties to anyone on the team. If he's #1, I hope he kicks ass and has a great year. Seems like he's earned it. Plus he's around 280 now and should thrive in this system.

Mullen sees growth in second scrimmage, Franks better
Florida coach Dan Mullen broke down what he saw from the second scrimmage of the spring, which featured a better performance from quarterback Feleipe Franks.

https://247sports.com/college/flori...ond-scrimmage-Feleipe-Franks-better-117162610

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Coming off the team's second scrimmage of the spring, Dan Mullen wasn't overly positive or negative either way about his team's performance.

He saw some definite signs of growth, though, including how the team handled the scrimmage as a whole. As always, there's still room to improve there.

"I thought we played better football as a whole, certain things on Saturday within each individual play," Mullen said. "I think we really still need to improve on understanding game situations and how to play out the scrimmage, you know what I mean?

"When offense, you have an advantage, we start a drive with great field position, those are the ones you have to capitalize. Defense, you've got them pinned up and defense has the advantage, those are when you've got to capitalize."

The Gators did that at times on Saturday, as Feleipe Franks turned in a much better day than the previous scrimmage. Mullen said he put together the best numbers and had a few touchdowns.

Most importantly, Franks is still learning how to manage the offense. But he made a number of plays with both his arm and his feet.

"He did good. He threw a couple of touchdown passes," Mullen said. "Number wise, Felipe had the best numbers at the quarterback position."

Ironically, the one thing that seemed to trouble the offense on Saturday was handling basic looks from the defense.

With the defense installing its new 3-4 scheme under defensive coordinator Todd Grantham this spring, the quarterbacks have gotten used to facing heavy pressure everywhere. When the defense played a more vanilla style at times on Saturday, the quarterbacks weren't used to it.

"They handled some hard situations very well, and then all of the sudden they got like the easiest situation you can be in and you get a 3rd down and 12 and you're playing us and it's coming from every different direction," Mullen said.

"They started getting used to handling all these exotic blitzes coming at them. Set in a base defense out there and everybody like freaked out because it was a base defense. I’m like, ‘Come on, it’s back to day one.’ You can’t miss those opportunities. But overall I thought they managed the game better than the week before."

All that will come in time. With spring ball wrapping up, there's still one thing Mullen wants to see, though.

His team hasn't quite figured out how to play with relentless effort for short bursts on a consistent basis. Though the Gators did a better job focusing on the next play in the second scrimmage, it's still an area that needs work.

Mullen wants more out of them over the next week to feel like spring ball really counted.

"The biggest thing we need to get out of them this week is the effort," Mullen said. "It’s not that they’re not giving effort. It’s them understanding how much effort they can give. Our guys are going hard, (but) I don’t know how much they’re straining.

"There’s a big difference between going hard and straining. Between guys thinking they’re going hard and that absolute strain to give everything you possibly have. If we can learn to do that better this week I’d say it’s been a pretty successful spring for us overall."

If he has earned it, then good for him. We won't know until fall. Personally, I think it is about motivating the guys behind him. Meyer does that. I didn't know he was up to 280. That's a big difference from the 260-265 he was at before.
