I'm sick of UF leading this category; from Spurrier to Zook to Meyer to the two retards....to Mullen, UF leads this category. It's unbelievable, doesn't matter who the coach is....

SEC's most penalized teams over the last 5 years

SEC’s most penalized teams over the last 5 years

Fans love to complain about officiating during football games, and this year, the SEC has even added an official Twitter account to handle some of the in-game explanations.

We can’t wait to watch that handle on the first controversial call of the year.

Anyway, we ran the numbers on penalties over the last five years in the SEC. The breakdown below is sorted by penalties per game.

SEC team penalties per game, last 5 seasons

Most penalties per game by season
  • 2018: Ole Miss 7.3, Florida 7.3
  • 2017: Florida 8.0
  • 2016: Florida 6.8
  • 2015: LSU 8.1
  • 2014: Missouri 7.3
Few Takeaways:

  • The Florida Gators have averaged 7.0 penalties per game since 2014, the most of any team in the SEC. Missouri, however, is determined to make it interesting. The Tigers are right behind the Gators averaging 6.7 penalties per game. The Gators have consistently been the most penalized team from the Urban Meyer era through the Jim McElwain era. The Gators tied Ole Miss in 2018 for the league worst averaging 7.3 penalties per game in Year 1 under Dan Mullen. It’s certainly an interesting phenomenon.
  • Alabama and Georgia, the two most consistent programs, are in the middle of the SEC averaging just 5.5 and 5.6 penalties per game respectively. Consider that Alabama has also played in 73 total games the last five years, the most in the SEC. Nick Saban’s teams usually play clean football on the biggest stages.

Oh man on of my favorite topics. My buddy and I talk about this often. Doesn't matter who the coach is at UF, somehow, we always end up one of the most penalized teams. When those coaches go to other teams... the penalties do not follow them. I would love somebody to offer an explanation other than official bias. Not saying that's what it is, but I would really like to hear any other plausible theories.

It's another reason I loved SOS so much, he took the ability of the refs to steal the game right out of ther hands.
You don't go 68 years without winning the SEC, in a talent rich state without help from the officials.
Spurrier changed all that.

Finally some concrete evidence to back up what most of us have felt all along -- Gators have been getting jobbed by the good ole boy SEC zebras for a long time.

I’d honestly like to see how many pre-snap penalties we’ve had over the years. It seems like we lead the known universe in false start penalties every year.

I think it's been this way since Pell & Hall. I've watched game after game (recorded)…things are called on us BUT overlooked for other teams.

On the other hand,...there is NO EXCUSE for Motion and Off Sides...That’s just poor discipline. It drove/drives me nuts since Urban. Butters MacShark seemed to be the worst for Jumping the count. That’s just SLOP.

I can take aggressive play BUT I can tolerate SLOP and STUPIDITY.

Nola I think you are right, at least from what I remember, once we got hit with Pell, the refs haven't been able to keep their flags in their pockets.

This. I remember as a kid, the moment I would hear a deep, southern accent from the official, I knew we were toast. Especially in Jax.

One of my favorite Spurrier moments was him absolutely calling out the ref(s) who called PI on Lott at the end of the '93 game when there was zero chance the WR could've caught it and stayed in bounds without some type of go-go gadget leg extension. Paraphrasing, but he flat out said they were trying to give the game to the bulldogs. Wasn't even close and gave them one last un-timed down to tie it. Of course...uga, so we know how that went.

Meyer didn't follow suit after the '08 SECCG, but should have. Inside 5 minutes to play and a team is driving at the opponents 2, and you call a sideline infraction because Meyer was a few feet over yelling the play to his offense? Made it second and goal from the 7. Completely unprecedented, and beyond obvious what they were trying to do. If we hadn't scored and the tide somehow win the game, that call goes down in the record book as one of the most egregious "judgement calls" in recent history. As it is, we had Tebow and won, and so no one gives it a second thought.

The Dallas Baker Tennessee game was one of the most obvious BS calls ever.

We've also gotten shafted on some calls vs. FSU over the years, enough to cost us the game.

And defensive offsides by D'linemen who have the ball right in front of them to watch it for the snap!

The '03 fsu game will always go down as the worst ever. And yes, the ut call, plus failing to start the clock was putrid as well. If you look at how much time was left when they kicked the game winning FG, proper clock management would've prevented that.

The '08 call just seemed bigger because of the stage, implications, and the fact that you may watch an entire season--every team, every game--and only see that penalty called 2-3 times total because it's so subjective and doesn't have the direct impact of a hold or pass interference. That move was the epitome of not letting the game be settled on the field.

Anyone know the year when Big Money recovered that fumble in the endzone and Clown refs called it a safety instead?

Id Iove to see that video again. Is it on youtube?

Not sure if I remember that one. That would have to be '98 or '99. The 2000 game wasn't close enough for it to have mattered.

Unless you're thinking of them calling the fsu RB down and no fumble, then changing it to a fumble but that fsu had recovered, all while Crowder is emerging from the pile with the ball in '03. Then, an unsportsmanlike call on him to boot. That was fun.

Would love to see the same breakdown of all SEC teams when other conferences are officiating.
