A source that’s close to the issue told Sporting News that the Big 12, which will see its athletic directors and presidents convene this Thursday and Friday, respectively, are eyeing BYU as a potential addition.

That’s due to the fact that the Cougars have a large fan base, competitive facilities and lots of money. However, they also don’t compete on Sundays, and that’s a major snag in the idea

That would be interesting.

BYU....and who else?

New Mexico State Univ? Another state to square off against PAC10..PAC12?
ULLAF? Steal LSU recruits?
Univ. of Alaska Anchorage? Untapped media outlet for major sports.
Houston Baptist? Law indicates they are recruiting well lately.

EDIT - should have read before posting:

1. The Big 12 could choose to move east to add Cincinnati and Connecticut. Cincinnati has developed the most consistent football program of potential expansion candidates and is located in a major media market. UConn is four-time NCAA champion in men’s basketball and also adds the cachet of the dynastic women’s basketball program.

2. For football recruiting purposes and long-term potential, the Big 12 could advance into Florida by adding Central Florida and South Florida.

BYU wants to be added as a Power 5 school, badly. They have the resources, national appeal, the large local fan base as well (65k football stadium, 20k basketball arena, both of which are routinely filled at or near capacity), and a chip on their shoulder from being left out of the 1st round of expansion while their rival Utah was assimilated into the Pac-12.

However, there are 3 major drawbacks to including BYU. 1 - you'd have to find a team to go with them, as TLB said. From their region, Boise State would be the best option as far as quality sports programs, though Boise isn't exactly a huge market. 2 - you'd need to work out the Sunday play issue. It's a non-starter for them. The WAC, MWC, and WCC have all made it work - would the Big XII want to? 3 - they have a TV deal with BYUtv that is one of the best, if not the best, sports channels in the country focusing on one school. The Big XII already sees the Longhorn Network as a huge headache - would they want to add a second network to negotiate with?

For those reasons, I don't see BYU being asked to join the Big XII any time soon.

Obvious reasons to tap into Florida w/ UCF or USF but if they stay out west and get BYU, I thought UNLV might get an interesting look. They just purchased 42 acres ($50M) of land in Vegas to expand the campus and build a new football stadium. They have a known basketball team and other sports. Football isn't anywhere near what some of those other schools have, but it would put a stake in a new state.

Expansion is about TV revenue. If it gets eyeballs on TVs, they will make it work.

BYU brings in lots of Utah and Nevada (Mormon country).

Geographically, western teams would make the most sense.

UConn is in the densely populated Northeast.

UCF and USF give you the I-4 corridor, lots of eyeballs in a new market, and fertile recruiting territory. Plus it would make sense for them to add some eastern teams with West Virginia hanging out there like a misfit.

They have 10 teams. 12 means a conference championship game.

They will start raiding some of the AAC schools for TV markets... Probably end up like all the rest of the P5's with 14 teams, make an East/West Divisions.

Cinci, Memphis, BYU, Houston should be the ones they look at. Houston will never get in due to Texas though.

Here in Orlando ucf is dying for an invite. Think an 0-12 season might have detailed that hope, but they hired a guy who used to coach at Oregon so all is well.

Teams that play defense need not apply.

Alex.

They actually just got NCAA approval a few weeks ago to have a conference championship game with having only 10 teams in the conference. No decision yet on whether they will do so or not for the upcoming season.

They should take Kentucky and vandy. Ahh, scratch that. Wins are too hard to come by these days.
