Interesting trade. The Braves give up disappointing Chris Johnson, who hasn't performed up to expectations since his outlier 2013 season and has repeatedly asked out of Atlanta. In return, they get back the over-priced contracts of Michael Bourn and Nick Swisher, both of whom seem past their prime and not able to contribute to a Major League squad anymore. As thanks for taking on these two contracts, the Indians shipped $10 million cold hard cash to Atlanta.
It's a bit of a gamble for the Braves and a seeming departure from their rebuild/get young prospects mantra of this year. If either of Bourn or Swisher pan out, then they will make out ahead, but if they don't, then I don't see why an admittedly rebuilding squad would want to take on extra probably-useless contracts.
Any other Braves fans (or anyone really) care to discuss their thoughts on the subject?? Thanks.
