Cover great stuff as always. You pretty much nailed it all the way around. On Driskel, spot on. We don't need him to be a superstar, just be efficient and run the offense. He' definitely getting the ball out quicker. Love our RB stable. You're right we are going to need them all to get through a tough SEC schedule. In addition I think Summers will coach up Moore and the rest of the OLine. Roper harps on getting the ball out in 3 secs or less. If he just ties a defender up at the line that should give JD near that time frame. I know it was EM but last year's edition would have won that game 17-16.

Don't ya think film study with coaches (& teammates) will cause Tyler Murphy enough shame to work out better ? That was against EMU-calibre players. Think increased # of tight catches thanks for a QB (JD) who rifles it swiftly into the breadbasket. ??
Outstanding rog post.

Burton couldn't catch a cold last year. Worst hands since the Venus De Milo. Dude went 7 catches on 7 targets Saturday. He didn't drop a ball thrown at him all day! After the (well deserved) beatings he has gotten from Gator fans in years past, it is nice to see him have a great game. Yes, I know those catches were on short throws, but last year he drops 4 of those. Hands of pure wood. This year, so far, much better. Alex.
Clay spent the off season going steady with Ms. Juggs and she made him into a new man.

C2, good stuff.

What did you think of that first drive? It made me a little uneasy: 3 missed 3rd down conversions...ate up a bunch of clock....dink & dunk (really reminded me of Pease's O)....and ended in a FG. Then after that the scores came quickly (long runs). I was more concerned about "sustained drives". But, it ended well...and they looked pretty damn good!
First drive was like that first date...kind of testing the waters, little bit of nerves, etc. We went from Jethro Bodine to Dash Riprock pretty quickly though. Perspective is that it was EMU and we were anxious to paint a better picture than that of last season IMO.

We only threw EIGHT first down passes last year. EIGHT! In this game alone, it was at least 15 passes on first down. Even if it is a short pass, it has a greater chance of more yardage with our super athletic receivers.

Not even close to being accurate. I just went through the Toledo game alone and we passed 5 different times on first down. Then I went through the Miami game and we passed the ball 15 times on first down. I'm not saying we threw on first down a lot last year, but it was a hell of a lot more than 8 times.

The plan was to be more balanced between pass and run plays, but all that went out the door once Jeff went down for the year. I never was a big fan of Pease's offensive play calling but he was trying to mix it up at the beginning of the season. I think they just weren't confident in the back-up QBs like they were Jeff so they changed up the strategy for the remainder of the season and it definitely made things harder on the offense going run heavy and only throwing on 3rd and long.

Preaching to the choir. I just have no clue where that "we only passed it 8 times on 1st down in 2013" stat came from. It's disastrously inaccurate.

Edit: Even with Murphy starting the UK game, we passed it 6 times on 1st down.

Maybe the OP was confusing "passing for a first down" with "passing on first down"? :dunno:

Wouldn't be remotely accurate in that sense, either.

I don't know what he means either - we passed for 10 first downs in the Toledo game according to Gatorzone.

I'm lost then. Maybe the OP will clarify where they got their info from. Most likely it came from a dark stinky orifice.

Regarding the number of first down throws, I was quoting what I heard an announcer say on ESPN during the game. I am very confident that I heard them say 8 first downs last year, and 15 first downs in this first game. So either I have to get my ears checked, or the announcers gave us the wrong information.

By throwing vertical passes downfield will definitely open up some pass to the TE I'm liking the play calling and utilizing so many receivers and WR's...keeps the defense guessing

Perhaps they were comparing first game to first game. They were both against cream puffs. ??
