I use to be amazed at what Boston Dynamics was doing. And compared to 40 years ago it is amazing. Boston Dynamics solved the "balance" problem with state of the art IMU's and servos. However these days IMU chips the size of your thumbnail are installed in everything from phones to drones. You could build the 4 legged Spot model in your garage with the IMU from a copter drone.
What you are seeing in their videos are carefully programmed movements. It's just following the steps in it's code. There's no real AI going on there. In real world applications you would still have to "drive" these robots just like you would drive something on wheels. Spot is about as smart as a Rumba.
The company has been sold several times since 2013 and are now owned by Hyundai. They started out of MIT and even had contracts with Darpa. But the technology has gone stale. Thus being bought and sold a few times.
It's still cool to see but there really isn't anything special happening - not these days.
