Interesting read. The 15 year old, Mike Garvey, went to my high school in Jax., Robert E. Lee, but was a couple of years behind me. He played football for Lee and one of the guys who knew him well referred to him as a "fruitcake". A former UF professor was in charge of Castro's firing squad. I never knew any of this. Batista had a home in Daytona Beach and he and his family often stayed here.

Great story DC. Thanks for posting. When I was building apartments in Atlanta, I became friends with a cuban painting contractor. Jose was from a wealthy family and fought with the guerrillas to overthrow the Batista regime. Later when Castro became a communist, Jose fought against Castro and was imprisoned. He said every morning they would take prisoners from the large cell they were kept in and would shoot them in the courtyard in plain view of the other prisoners. His family paid a ransom for his release and he made his way to the US by paying a fishing boat captain.
