Even the national media isn't pulling punches:

FLORIDA FLOPS

Yes, the Gators could flip Brandon and Breyon Gaddy away from Maryland and should land four-star wide receiver James Robinson, and I’m sure they will add a few more three-stars and perhaps another four-star here or there. Despite all of that, this class has been a bit of a disaster for Jim McElwain and his staff from the start. They will be scrambling to pull into the national top 20, which is ridiculous based on Florida's brand name and the program's back-to-ba ck SEC East titles.

I've always been of the opinion that if you're top 10-12 on an annual basis, you fill your needs and you avoid situations like we had a few years in a row where we signed guys but lost like 60%+ of them in the first 18 months, you'll be just fine. Would we like to be #1, 2 or 3 in the country every year? Sure, but it's not mandatory...and if the product on the field is winning games and exciting to watch, we'll grab the occasional top 5 class. Now, we also can't be finishing at #23 in the nation and 10th in the conference, that won't cut it.

You posted this..

That is not true. We'll never beat Bama or FSU under your scenario let alone win any titles. Your contention that your post lines up with that article is patently false. Stomping your feet like a child doesn't help you any. In fact, you are all over the board. You are trying to rationalize 10-12 ranked classes. It did not work. Keep trying though.

You left out the part of my post where I noted grabbing a top 5 class on occasion. Oh, and the part where I said finishing 23rd in the country won't cut it (but yeah, I'm a pumper /sarc).

If our competition, F$U, bama, etc. is pulling classes ranked 1-5 with an occasional 10 that ain't gonna cut it either. No matter what we have to out recruit the teams we play.

Oddly he is now a 3* player:

https://247sports.com/player/abule-abadi-46037423

Now I wonder what football things he did in the last few days to change his ranking so much?

He had two different listings on Rival. He had one listing under just Abule Abadi (same high school and everything) that was zero stars. He also had a listing under the name Abule Abadi-Fitzgerald that was a 3 star.

Rivals must have figured out the duplicate listing after he visited Florida, because it appears to have been corrected now.

Yes, same kid. His HUDL video is also under Abadi-Fitzgerald and he is a 3-star on Rivals and 247.

But FSU isn't. According to the article, they averaged a class rank of #7 for the years cited prior to winning the NC. Neither have many of our other competitors. Bama is averaging top 5 and they've obviously done well...except this year when they got beat by a team that I believe has averaged outside the top 10 (and please don't give me the "but they got 5 star guys at skill positions so being out of the top 10 doesn't count in their case). Ditto that for Texas, they averaged outside the top 10 for the years cited by the article, #11 I believe, and my guess is that their 4th year, the one left out by the author, was pretty low otherwise he would have included it to strengthen his point.

I'd be curious to see what the actual average ranking is for all 4 years prior for each of these teams. My guess is that it would be somewhere between 7-10. Maybe I'll research when I have time and post it.

I'd also be curious as to the impact that lack of early departures (i.e.- depth) had on a team's success (not sure I could easily track and quantify that) and how many of these teams had some really bad classes in retrospect (highly rated classes on signing day that just flopped miserably and/or had heavy attrition throughout); my guess is not many. Remember Meyer's last few classes with us? They were the all time greatest on paper...but how did they work out for us on the field?

Yeah I saw the two listings when his name first cropped up the other day. He is an interesting and intriquing prospect.

Brutal article. Before Mac arrived our average class rank was 7th in the country. 7th. Goober McShucks will never come close to that.

Florida (32 prospects in Top247)
Florida, buoyed by IMG Academy in Bradenton, was a high-end talent hotbed in the 2017 class with five five-star prospects in the 247Sports Composite. Of those five-stars, three are headed to Alabama.

That’s the Alabama Effect in 2017.

Nick Saban can go where he wants to acquire talent, and Florida’s always been a critical state for his efforts. In total, five of Florida’s Top 25 prospects are committed to the Crimson Tide. Of Alabama’s top-ranked, 25-prospect (at the moment) 2017 class, seven of its members went to high school in Florida.

It’s notable that Ohio State also pulled three of Florida’s Top 10 prospects in the 2017 class, while Michigan added one (Jim Harbaugh’s spring break trip in Florida paid off with a commitment from Cesar Ruiz). That means just three of the state’s Top 10 players will stay home for college with all three playing at Florida State. In total, only seven of the state’s Top 25 prospects will stay in Florida.

Compare that to years past, and it’s a pretty large departure.

Five years ago, four of the state’s Top 10 prospects and 15 of the Top 25 stayed in-state for college. Ten years ago (247Sports did not exist then) eight members of the Top 10 and 14 members of the Top 25 stayed home.

There are several reasons for this decline: In-state programs have gone through lulls (Florida and Miami), recruiting is more national than ever (Alabama, Ohio State and Michigan go wherever they want for prospects) and the addition of IMG Academy.

IMG, particularly, skews these rankings. Taking kids from all of the country, IMG’s players are still rated in Florida. Nine members of Florida’s Top 25 attended IMG, and only one member of that group will stay in the Sunshine State for college. Of the eight that are leaving, none were originally from Florida.

Take those eight away and look at prospects ranked 26-33 and you find five prospects committed to in-state schools. It’s still not a closed border in Florida, but the stats look a little better for the Seminoles, Gators and Hurricanes without IMG prospects considered.

Distribution of Florida’s Top 25 Prospects

Five: Alabama, Florida State
Three:
Ohio State
Two:
Michigan, Texas A&M
One:
LSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Florida

Uncommitted Prospects: Tedarrell Slaton, Jarez Parks, James Robinson and Christopher Henderson

Yeah constantly ranking 10-12 ain't gonna cut it unless maybe you happen to pull an all world QB.

After some quick research - Clemson's front 7? One 5 star, five 4 stars and one 3 star. You need blue chip talent to compete even at Clemson. Oh...and great coaching helps too.
