Late to the party, eh?
All-survivor mode, not.
That dude (McCandless (sp?)) had no business going to Alaska to do what he did. Sure, you can hobo around the SW with minimal provisions, but Alaska's a different beast all-together. He just didn't have the training to survive in that wilderness.
I've been telling him to read the book for awhile now.

Watched a few in the last week that i would recommend.

Dr Strange - If you like comic movies this one was a lot better than I expected. The effects are pretty cool.

Hacksaw Ridge - Great war movie and a brutal battle scene

Get a Job - about kids out of college and their struggles to find a career. One of the other story lines is about a 50 year old who loses his job and has to hunt as well. The message is pretty much that trophy mentality stunted them as people and early in the movie there is a great scene where one of them is complaining and the boss tell him to STFU because he doesn't owe him sh*t.

Hologram For the king - Tom Hanks flick I didn't hear about until it came on TV. He is sent to Saudi Abaria to sell something and the culture shock is the best part when his driver is talking about things. The first half is more comedy while the second half turns into a drama and brings it down a little.

Yeah he was woefully (and willfully, it seems) unprepared for the task at hand. Shameful.

Why Him?

Date night with the wife, and this was pretty enjoyable for both of us. The story overall is a little dumb, with the father's job situation and how his company is taken care of in the end. But the connection between his daughter and the male suitor is played out very well throughout the story. Best part is several honest laugh-out-loud moments during the film which makes up for a few of the silly-smarmy-sweet moments or plot lines that keep things moving. I'd give it about 7/10, definitely worth sharing on a date night.

Battle for Sevastopol (2015) <Amazon Prime>

Film made by Ukraine/Russia about Lyudmila Pavlichenko "Lady Death". She was a real life sniper with over 300 confirmed kills. Very interesting woman, however the film wasn't what I expected. I was kind of hoping for an action film showing her be a bad ass. But from the get go, we're getting narrative from Eleanor Roosevelt who befriended Lyudmila when she was sent on a US tour to try and get the Western nations to start a second front against Hitler (essentially, she'd become a propaganda face for USSR). There's plenty of war scenes, and a few threads of romance for her to try and reflect her humanism, and how it gets pushed away by her periodically. Ultimately, not a great action film, more of a personalized documentary about the person showing her pre-war, in-war, and after she'd been removed from front lines based on her health and value as a spokesperson. I did learn about her US tour, and friendship with Roosevelt, neither of which I had any clue to before hand. And I got to see more of the legend as a person. Not what I was looking for, but still a decent flick. In the end, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. Anyone wanting war movies, this ain't it. If you wan't a bio, it'll do, but you have to really be into snipers and know of her to care enough to watch this. It's good, but there are better things to spend your time on.

Sicario <Amazon Prime>

There was a lot of buzz about this when it came out, I thought. But I'm not seeing it as a great flick. Three primary leads are del Toro (Colombian cartel looking for revenge), Brolin (CIA lead pointing del Toro where to attack and enabling him), and Blunt (FBI agent getting used by Brolin). We follow Blunt through her perspective of events to make you feel bought in, but the way she's treated you feel just as 'in the dark' as she is throughout. Maybe that is supposed to leave it open for the audience to keep guessing what's going on, but as the plot flows there aren't significant twists/turns/a-ha_moments. It's only mildly predictable, but it's not that entertaining. I'll give kudos on a good soundtrack keeping the mood where it should be, and the actors portray their roles fairly well, but all in all I'm left disappointed. Blunt's partner tags along...for what? Blunt gets abused along the way both by withholding information and physically, and while the physical attack has a point, it's still kinda dumb. Best I could take from the film was del Toro trying to show some compassion for her, and you wonder how much of it is self serving to play her vs genuine, but even that bit of storyline is weak and doesn't take you very far. I'd give it about a 5/10 and not recommend it. I don't have hopes for the sequel they have in the works.

Friday night at the theater - Hidden Figures - feel good movie of the year.
Saturday night rental - Loving - meh (the wife picked it up at the video store).
Edit: Forgot Saturday night - Arrival - forgettable, I guess.
Sunday evening on Amazon with the boy - Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone (we just finished reading the book to our 7-year-old son).
Monday matinee with the boy - Lego Batman Movie (pretty good, but the original Lego movie was better).
Monday night on Prime - 13 Hours (maybe the best movie I've seen in the latest slew of Oscar-nominated movies that my wife has been motivated to watch).

Friday night - Captain Fantastic - the wife was reluctant to watch this one, but eventually we ran out of other movies she was intetered in. We both loved it. Kind of a surprise, given the story line and all that happens.
Saturday night - Hacksaw Ridge - we both liked this one as well. Pretty intense. I think Vince Vaughn did okay, but he still seemed out of place, IMO.
