New details emerge regarding Jim McElwain’s struggles with running the Florida program

https://www.ajc.com/sports/college/...g-the-florida-program/kWRFyNGz36I7zcITZ8YoYO/

The fallout from Jim McElwain’s departure as the head coach of the Florida Gators has just about been as strange as his time in charge.

And on Tuesday, more somewhat bizarre details surfaced regarding McElwain’s final year in Gainesville and the status of the Gators strength and conditioning program.

In a strong piece examining the different coaches from the coaching tree of Alabama head coach Nick Saban, Sports Illustrated’s Andy Staples delves into part of what went wrong for McElwain during the season which ultimately became his last at Florida.

“McElwain talked about having a similar organizational structure to Saban’s, but he didn’t inherent Saban’s attention to detail,” Staples writes. “During McElwain’s final year at Florida, some Gators were paying their own way to be trained elsewhere in Gainesville by former Olympian Tim Montgomery. That should have been a glaring red flag with regard to the Gators’ strength program, but nothing was done to correct the issues that caused the players to seek help outside the program.”

With that situation occurring this past year, it’s now no surprise at all that one of Dan Mullen’s primary goals that he outlined upon being named the Gators new head coach was the necessity of an overhaul of the strength and conditioning program.

“I told them to rest up over the month of December,” Mullen said the day he was introduced. “Because when they come back in January, it’s probably going to be something they have never even experienced in their life before, our offseason conditioning program.”

And Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin backed his new coach’s plan.

“I think it’s critical,” he said. “It’s the backbone. I think any successful program has a really strong strength and conditioning program that builds accountability, and I think programs that aren’t as successful usually are lacking in that area.”

And earlier this month, Mullen took one of the first steps on that road, reportedly hiring Mississippi State strength coach Nick Savage to the same position with the Gators.

Attention to detail on making a PB&J (you better spread the peanut butter to the crust  ) >>> attention to detail regarding a multi-million dollar football program. At least that’s what Mac thinks.

He's doing the right things, too, so far.

I want to read articles this winter about players puking and how tough the new S&C coach is, etc.

It is completely unacceptable....and was apparently widely known as well (by the media, who - for whatever reason - didn't report on it). WTF was Foley doing while all this was going on? Gloating in the SEC East "title"? I hope Stricklin purges the rest of the Foley staff out of the UAA.

That is certainly the question. Part of me thinks Stricklin and whoever else at the top paid Butters a buyout instead of going through with a lawsuit because they didn't want their own incompetence in this matter exposed. After all, wasn't ANYONE overseeing the coaching staff? How the hell did these idiots get extensions? They wanted it to go away as quickly as possible.

There's absolutely no question that UF could have gotten away with firing Mac for cause and paying him NOTHING - he failed to do his contractual duties, period.

As for the UF media, they proved they are lapdogs. They obviously feel they have no choice, but it's pretty sickening anyway.

Stricklin tried to come clean by admitting it was one of his greatest regrets.

Ironic, huh? Guess most journalists these days are lacking in that same way inherent inheritance...

Why, YES Madam wannabe president! It DOES friggin matter! And Mac getting paid millions of dollars to apparently NOT do his job matters too! Both are responsible for deaths in their own rights... just one is more important than the other.... in case anyone is wondering, I’m talking about the death Americans who were sent... then abandoned and left to die... all in the name of politics. After all, there was an election to win...

Edit: sorry... that’s my one political rant for the year. You rarely, if ever, see me say anything political here.

From the article cited:

“McElwain talked about having a similar organizational structure to Saban’s, but he didn’t [inherit] Saban’s attention to detail,” Staples writes.

McElwain ran a rudderless program. McElwain gave new meaning to the term "lack of institutional control".
I remember reading about players using trainers outside the program and thinking how odd that sounded. It seemed to me that the players are a type of investment and that the program would want to monitor their investment and manage all training on campus. Guess not.

We don't know how well CDM will work out for UF but just the fact that McElwain is gone is a huge weight off the shoulders and by itself feels like a ginormous step forward.

No one takes the time or expense to edit well anymore. I regularly see grammatical and usage errors in articles all the time - and, honestly, my own posts. (I’m a horrible typist, so bad that autocorrect is learning and substituting my more frequent errors. )

The rear view mirror is a lot smaller than the windshield. We may find out more about the particulars of our decay under Mac, but I’m glad it’s behind us.
