What an absolutely mind numbing and infuriating comment from Mullen. Everybody was recruiting Tebow and Cam. Just because he lucked out with Prescott, doesn’t mean that’s the way to find players. You don’t go around looking for diamonds in the rough. It’s nice when one falls in your lap, but hope is not a strategy.

Yep he loves to mention that class when confronted about his poor recruiting this year but fails to say they went 1-3 against final AP top 25 teams that year.

J, I agree it's a silly comment....but the one thing none of us can complain about w/ Mullen's recruiting - so far - is QB. He got EJ, a high 4-star (top 100 overall player), 4-star Jalon Jones (who I like better than EJ - because he's a lot bigger), and now the local kid who will be a 4-star. If he was signing Trask's 2-star cousin from Texarkana, Texas who was on a 7-man football team I'd be concerned.

It still concerns me because I doubt we will be beating Georgia much if we are bringing in classes well below them. The QB wont be able to overcome that by himself most games.

Sure, especially if he uses that thinking at the other positions. But he specifically mentioned QBs and that's an area Mullen is doing very well. The bottom line is we are't catching UGA in this cycle....and probably not the next. We just gotta hope we can stay close; finish inside the top 20 and land as many blue-chips as possible....and then hope Mullen is smart enough to make some changes after the season.

Yep. And that's how it begins. It's the "get a grip" and/or "didn't we win the East" mentality all over again.

I'll give him this. From day one, he hasn't shied away from voicing the expectations of championships and winning. So if his strategies fail, he'll have nowhere to go.

Still, as you say, not a good sign in terms of where his head is at.

Well, if we use the Clemson model and hang around the 10-15 range in recruiting but get studs at qb and LOS and develop them then we'll be ok, but I'll caveat that by saying that Clemson's offensive scheme is much more dynamic than ours.

Agree w/ the Clemson model analogy....but I think we can mimic that model, but do slightly better - over time. Once the dust settles from the last two sh*tty coaches mess....and we finally break ground on the facilities, I'd imagine UF can start cracking the top 10 annually - w/ an occasional 12th or so. But right now we're lacking at OL big-time. Gourage is the only highly rated OL (so far). So that area needs to improve.

No, but as we've seen by Clemson beating Bama, QB is the one position that can make up for others. We certainly have a long ways to go to fix recruiting, but at least we are hitting the QB position, and you'd hope that position would take some leadership of the classes.

Clemson has definitely shown an elite QB combined with elite D linemen go a long way.

I agree with you about the need to recruit highly, but this response is standard coach speak. Even Saban, Meyer and Smart would say they go by their own evaluations and focus on guys who fit their program rather than stars. And every one of them would point to their underrated guys who became actual stars.

But, the mere fact those coaches are after a kid will garner 4 stars.

ehh... Im familiar with venebles including prior to getting hired by dabo. His defenses gave up alot of points when he was with Bobby at OU, and even after, during his first few years at Clemson his defenses were torched a number of times. I think the recruiting far more than DC is the reason for their recent success.

I think LSU is a prime example to show that's just not gonna cut it. LSU has had classes that range from #2- #12 since Saban took over at Bama yet they've only beat them twice . Saban has had a top 5 class every year since 2009. If UGA keeps recruiting the way they are and we recruit like your saying then were in major major trouble. In order to keep up we have to recruit mostly top 5 classes it's that simple. Bama and UGA are gonna get theirs that seems pretty clear so we have to keep up or we will fall to far behind. I think that's already the case but a top 5 class would help.

There's nothing about LSU that's anywhere close to the Clemson model. Their QB situation is and has been for over a decade, much worse than ours as impossible as that seems.
