I've noticed this pattern with several breweries. It seems that if their staple is a more hop-forward, PA/IPA approach, they struggle to deviate into other categories without having their "base" impact the flavors. The end result is a total failure. I applaud them for trying to be balanced and branch into new territories, but too often I see this type of swing and miss. As great as Bells is, I've even seen some of their offerings fall flat on their face as they unsuccessfully try to get away from their core. Sometimes you have to stick with what you know. Even the name sounds terrible.
I'll be at the Food and Wine Festival this weekend, and will be out and about, so will hopefully have some new stuff to try and report back. Really hoping I can find that Oktoberfest.
