Here's a happy thread. What 5-star busts really surprised you? Who do you regard as 5-star busts for UF?

A few for UF:
John Brown
Torrey Davis
Brock Berlin

Nationally, Dillon Baxter is one that I was glad didn't sign with UF.

John Brown had a learning disability. Never played a down for us.

I'll go with Debose.

Mehhh... Hard to call Berlin a bust. He just got tired of waiting.

Toreey Davis also not a bist IMO. He won us a NC with two straight goalline tackles.

I think Deonte Stonehands Shoulda Been A CB Thompson was a five star.

There are more.

In before the Donkey and Rex go on a rant about how you think stars don't count and rankings don't matter.
Yes, stars dont matter. Thats why pumper are creaming their skinny jeans since we landed a 5 star QB.

He ended up not signing with us, but 5* Willie Williams has to be up there.

The #1 OLB in the nation was labeled the next Lawrence Taylor. The 5* was 6' 3" and 240 and ran a 4.3. He was a freak. He was also a walking disaster.

On his recruiting trip in Gainesville he sexually assaulted a girl, punched a guy in a club and set off three fire extinguishers in the hotel. He had 11 arrests in high school. Miami, because they're Miami, still signed him. When he signed with Miami he was on house arrest and wearing a monitoring device on his ankle.

He left Miami without making an impact and went to a community college in Los Angeles. He eventually found his way to Louisville, because it's Louisville. He was arrested again and kicked off the team. He ended up with a 15 year prison sentence in Kentucky. He is set to be released in 2023.

Mehhh... Hard to call Berlin a bust. He just got tired of waiting.

There are many important lessons in the Berlin situation. Among them are:

1. We do not know if the number 9 QB in 1999 is better or worse than the number 1 QB in 2000. There is some imprecise talk like 2018 is maybe not a good year for defensive tackles, but the year to year comparisons are rarely made.

2. Even if the number 1 QB in 2000 is a better prospect than the number 9 QB in 1999, the number 9 QB in 1999 with a years experience may always have a leg up on the number 1 QB in 2000.

3. A kid with big numbers playing at a regular high school is likely better than a kid with big numbers playing at a school pack with other D1 prospects. Or at least it is hard to know who is the future college star when both the QB and the receivers are high D1 prospects.

Yep he never played good at either Miami or Louisville.

A lot of people seem to think Joslyn was about the biggest bust UF ever had. He was considered the best O lineman prospect in the nation that year apparently.

Not sure if Ronald Powell should be mentioned or not due to having injury issues but he certainly never played anywhere near his hype coming in as the nation's top ranked recruit that year.

Zac Zedalis wants in on this discussion.

I'd put Powell in a "5-star but not a star" category along with Darrell Lee & Dexter Daniels. He did start. He did play well. But he wasn't "all that". Was he a cancer in the locker room? Hard to say but that conflict that spring of 2010 was an early indicator the closet shelves were caving in.

I'm on record noting they do matter, but aren't very precise. 5-stars do succeed at a higher rate than 4s and 4s at a higher rate than 3s. 2-star guys (Steve Harris & Brandon James being 2) very rarely do anything or even last (Linden Trail).

But there are so many more lower rated guys and the 1-in-a-million will make the All-Star team or whatever.

Fewer guys are entirely overlooked anymore. Talent gets recognized and publicized.

Safety Tre Orr- Don't remember the name? Yeah he didn't see the field much. Highly touted safety I think from the 00 class, and never saw the field.
WR - Reggie Vickers..Big recruit out of Belle Glade..Think he was a nephew of either Reidel or Fred..I'm not sure if the guy ever caught a pass for us.
Safety Kyle Jackson- Big recruit...no ball skills, and couldn't make an open field tackle to save his life. Not exactly traits you want in a safety. He played a little as a freshmen back in 04 before Reggie came via Juco, and eventually lost his job a few games into his sr season 07 to Major.

Safety Cory Bailey- Big five star recruit. Wasn't particularly good at anything.

Ronald Powell led the team in sacks his sophomore season, and suffered an ACL tear going into 2012. He wasn't a #1 overall type player like Clowney the year after Powell came out, but he was a solid player. I certainly wouldn't label him a bust.
