Wilt Chamberlain was an amazing athlete. Sub-11 100 yd dash, 56 foot shot put, 6'6" high jump, 22 ft broad jump, 45'9" triple jump, a post BBall career in professional volleyball, and NBA teams were trying to bring him back into the league well into his 40s. He was immensely strong, too. He could dead lift 625. He once grabbed a basketball and threw a 2-handed chest pass, while KC Jones was holding on to the ball! Bob Lanier, 6'10" and 270, said Wilt picked him up "like a cup of coffee." Wilt could jump, too, as in, to the TOP of the glass. He dislocated Gus Johnson's shoulder blocking his shot. The NBA changed rules because of Wilt. No rules were changed for Bo.

Chamberlain should be in the discussion with Thorpe and Babe Didrickson.

Wilt was a monster. Averaging 50 points a game or scoring 100 points in a single game is an amazing feat regardless of level of competition. And he did it at the highest level.

And that's not even taking into account his track and field prowress. The best display of his remarkable size is when Arnold bumps into him in Conan the destroyer.

  1. Jim Thorpe (no question)
  2. Hershel Walker
  3. Rick Casares
  4. Bo Jackson
  5. Wilt Chamberlain
  6. Babe Didrisckson

So we are now using the worst Conan movie with Arnold as a reason?

I don't think yesterday's athlete could compete today sorry 78

I totally disagree with you. Yes the records then are nothing of what they are today, but neither is the money. Back in Jim Thorpe's day all pro athletes had other jobs and to do what he did in the Olympics, baseball, and football that was pretty amazing. This means they couldn't focus 365 on A Sport they had other things as well. Don't get it twisted I voted Bo (because he is the best of all times...in my life time), but if Jim Thorpe was an option I wouldve put his name down.

Jack Johnson was Heavyweight Champion at the time, so you are incorrect.

Didn't Chamberlain claim he benched 600 pounds or some crazy mess like that years ago. I think the world record was around 600 when he was claiming that.

That's simply not true. He was physically dominant over other players.

In 1969 (Wilt was in the middle of his pro career), Joe Dube won the Gold at the World Weight Lifting Championships in Warsaw Poland. His press was 202.5 kg. He went to my high school in Jacksonville.
