Generally speaking, paying kids to go to college, for most any reason, is pretty crazy. Govt type entities give more and more money for college tuition and expenses every year, and then we sit around and wonder why college keeps getting more and more expensive.

The stipend should be the same for all schools. You can't tell me it's more expensive to live in sh*tholes like Knoxville or Auburn than it is in places like Athens, Nashville or Gainesville.

I'm surprised there are not more articles about this. This one is a little bit better:
https://college.usatoday.com/2015/0...d-to-recieve-new-cost-of-attendance-stipends/

The university announced April 15 that it will now provide all scholarship athletes with monthly payments, as a result of a new NCAA policy passed on Jan. 17. The Power 5 conferences — ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC — voted on the ruling, allowing colleges and universities to pay their student-athletes an additional $1,400 to $5,666 for “cost of attendance.”

I guess I'm in the minority on this. I think the stipend is a good thing. These kids can't hold down jobs for spending money during the season and the stipend is not outrageous. I think it's a win-win.

They already get to leave college debt free.

Schools are making obscene money off of them so I don't see anything wrong with it.

And athletes don't owe obscene money when they get out of college, so they don't need more money.

Also, where is the money coming from to pay these stipends? Because we all know schools will not be willing to take it out of the profits they make now.

I just made my final school loan payment 1 week ago. I graduated 15 years ago.

But back on topic, so only the power 5 conferences are doing this? I see GatorJ's point... but something still doesnt seem right about the way they set this up.

I have to agree with Wobble...there is no need for these athletes to be paid.

First off lets be clear about one thing...these athletes are already compensated by boosters and others. If you disagree just go look at some of the tattoos and cars these "poor" athletes have.

Secondly, they get a $80,000 education for free

Third, no one is holding a gun to these athletes head and forcing them to play. They are choosing to play thus they should know what comes with that territory including lack of ability to make a lot of money in college. Your company that you work for probably makes a lot of money of you and gives you not even a quarter of it, so who cares what the conferences make.

I'm sorry but are we forgetting the entire point of college and college athletics? It's there for education, not a semi-pro league. Would half of these "student athletes" even be able to get into college if it weren't for these sports that they play? Probably not...

So, the NCAA has officially become the "little NFL". Oh well, it was a great ride while it lasted.

Would this technically make the athlete an employee of the school?
