I was in my bosses office, where he was laying into me for drinking Zimas on the job.

Mid-rant, I pretended I tore my ACL, went home, cracked open a Zima, caught my breath, and regrouped.

Next day, I limped into his office with a clear plan and saved my job. Although unethical, faking an injury can be a successful strategy.

On the field and off.

As a career military and fire department employee, I learned a long time ago to never call in "sick". You always call in "twisted ankle" (or "I tweaked my ankle, it's killing me!"). A twisted ankle can be faked and it can heel very quickly. So missing one day due to a twisted or tweaked ankle is much easier to pull off than faking a cold or being sick!
