. This guy should also be suspended for however long it takes the guy to recover.

Ah the hockey rule is so smart. You pull out a knife on the rink and stab the guy and if he can play next game no suspension, but if you board a guy and he misses the season you do too. That is the dumbest type of rule making one could possibly come up with.

A lot of people fail to comprehend part of the problem is the runners themselves. They have a tendency to duck their head down and try to use their helmets as battering rams to pick up extra yardage. The only defense against that is to lower your own head which is covered in a padded shell, and hope for the best. That, or just refuse to try and tackle them, but then they'll lose their job to someone else who's willing to "stick their head in there" and make a play. It's lose/lose for the defenders. They need to start penalizing the runners who lower their heads, and that will help stop these concussions more than anything else they've ever done so far imo.

Maybe I was just “seeing things” but in addition to his mouthpiece flying out I could have sworn I saw a tooth accompanying it on the slow motion replay.

It's only dumb when you come up with asinine examples. Obviously something like your example would warrant a huge penalty. But if someone takes a cheap shot at a guy and ends his career, his career should be over, too. Maybe guys would think twice about being dirty as sh*t if their career depended on it.

It ended up being brutal, but it looked to me like he was just trying to clean up the tackle and was going to plant his shoulder into his chest but ball carrier started ducking and going down. When you have men this big, strong and fast sh*t like this is inevitable.

Huh? Just keep their head up. That's tacking 101. They aren't supposed to lead with their head.

Yeah, it's sooooo rarely intentional in football, but people act like it is all the time. The speed, strength, change in direction, quick moves up and down etc. are the reasons this happens. Nearly all of the time, players don't headhunt, because guess what else? It can seriously hurt the tackler too!

That said: That hit was freaking brutal! Man, that was ugly.

I was taught in 69 by an ex gator player (our coach who played fullback for Graves and Woodruff) to put your face in their number when tackling.

They can encase players heads in concrete and the result will continue to be concussions. The only answer is flag football.

In rugby it's illegal to make contact above the shoulders when tackling. It's not a situation where they make safer tackles because they aren't wearing helmets. It's not the player's concern for each other's safety, it's the players following the rules.

There also isn't a concept of first downs and yardage so there really isn't a need to fight over inches except at the goal line. When you get tackled you have to give up the ball, so there isn't a need to try to separate the guy from the ball with the hit. They don't have the forward pass so there isn't the same qb/receiver defenseless player scenario. Plus they aren't allowed to just lower their shoulder and hit someone, they have to wrap up.
