I am really skeptical of the "7.5 inch handspan is average" statistic that is bandied around ... I would not be a bit surprised if that dated to the Civil War period, when the average man was 5'8" and 143 pounds (per enlistment records.) It seems to be a Lake Wobegon kind of stat, where 90% of folks are better than average.
