It seems like ND and UNC were sniffing around also. He was in great demand. I really wonder why he settled for USC.

He got impatient and took a crappy job.

In his book he talks about telling UNC he was interested but then they went and kept John Bunting on.

Alabama also came sniffing when Saban kept yoyoing.

He liked being able to do "firsts" at places. USC had zero history/accomplishments. Still don't.

Yep I remember thinking back then that LSU just winning a national championship recently might make Spurrier want a challenge elsewhere.

Yeah, I remember that. Of course, first Dick Rod accepted the Bammer job, then changed his mind and stayed with the Poor Hillbillies.

No doubt Spur Dog can be impetuous at times. There were reports that he was annoyed at having to go through an interview process at UF after Zook was fired. I believe one big reason he went to USC was his strong friendship with out-going USC coach Lou Holtz.

That's accurate, Chomper. He felt he could pick up where Holtz left off, in an atmosphere less pressurized that Gainesville and in an area of the country he was already familiar with. I remember the LSU rumors and wondering how that could work. He just didn't seem like the right cultural fit for Baton Rouge.
