Bertman liked the idea of hiring Steve Spurrier if Saban left, but Spurrier was impatient and accepted the South Carolina job in November, a month before Bertman hired Miles.

Spurrier to LSU could have been frightening.

Yep I remember thinking back then that LSU just winning a national championship recently might make Spurrier want a challenge elsewhere.

Alabama tried to get SOS interested in them in 2007 as they went back and forth and ultimately hired Saban. Every AD except perhaps one was very interested in hiring the best college football coach throughout the 00s.

Yeah, I remember that. Of course, first Dick Rod accepted the Bammer job, then changed his mind and stayed with the Poor Hillbillies.

No doubt Spur Dog can be impetuous at times. There were reports that he was annoyed at having to go through an interview process at UF after Zook was fired. I believe one big reason he went to USC was his strong friendship with out-going USC coach Lou Holtz.

That's accurate, Chomper. He felt he could pick up where Holtz left off, in an atmosphere less pressurized that Gainesville and in an area of the country he was already familiar with. I remember the LSU rumors and wondering how that could work. He just didn't seem like the right cultural fit for Baton Rouge.
