GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Kevin Carter has lived much of his life in the spotlight.

A 14-year NFL veteran and former Gators All-American defensive lineman, the 42-year-old Carter is now a college football analyst for ESPN. Carter made the most of his opportunities at UF as a player and student.

As he arrived Monday for the official opening of the Otis Hawkins Center at Farrior Hall, UF's new state-of-the-art academic center, Carter recognized several familiar faces who played crucial roles in his success at UF and continue to help student-athletes more than 20 years since Carter starred for the Gators from 1991-94.

People such as longtime academic support specialists Ann Hughes, Tom Williams and Tim Aydt, and Senior Associate Athletics Director Keith Carodine, who started at the Hawkins Center in 1992.

"I see the people that impacted my life and helped me become who I am today,'' said Carter, the emcee for Monday's grand opening. "It's a wonderful feeling to see that that tradition is still being carried on."

While what takes place on the field or arena headlines the efforts of UF's nearly 500 student-athletes, their most important victories usually happen when no one is cheering other than the Hawkins Center's 19-person staff.

They have a track record as impressive as any coach on campus.

UF is the only SEC school with 100 or more SEC Academic Honor Roll honorees the past 18 years and was the first school in the conference to be selected as a program of excellence by the Division I-A Athletic Directors' Association.

The construction of the $25 million, 82,613-square foot Hawkins Center at Farrior Hall is the latest commitment by UF and the University Athletic Association to the success of the athletic program in the classroom.

The facility includes 74 study rooms/tutoring labs equipped with the latest digital media resources, a 125-seat auditorium, an 800-square foot fueling station, and in essence is the campus hub for student-athlete tutoring, academic advising, studying, job placement and other services.

......The numbers being throw around for FSU's is between 75-85 million. It isn't clear if that is for football only or their entire project like UF's. The 2 articles I read implied that is the estimated cost of the football facility.....

Friggin fsu will find a way to stick the taxpayers of the state with the bill....

Geez Law, it all sounds perfect, but you left out the things that the players MOST care about. A place for the hookers to hang out, the bowling alley, the driving range, a go-kart raceway, video arcade area as big as the O-dome, paintball field, music listening room and studio, etc. etc.
Oh, a Hookers n Blow room is a given.

Is this true? If so, Foley should be throat punched 1000 times. That is unacceptable.

They have to walk about the equivalent of 2 blocks just to get to the practice fields, so yeah, it's probably true.

The timeline on this thing needs to get expedited. It'll literally be 2020 or later before anything is done.

That is pretty disgusting. Anyone who glosses over this or trivializes this stuff needs to kick rocks because they are part of the problem at this point. It's actually embarrassing. Thanks Foley.

On the bright side, we'll have the nicest empty baseball stadium in the state:woohoo:

For fifty million, I heard we can build a premium box for all 25-75 baseball fans in attendance.

Can you supply a link to these numbers? No one else seems to be bringing it up, just bytching and moaning about not spending the necessary money. A quick Google search and all the numbers I am seeing say 60 million for the football facility, 100 million was the total proposal for all three sports.

Right. And it doesnt add up. Youncant spend $50 mil on a baseball stadium, $60 mil on a football building, and tens of millions on other sports, and have a $100 mil total project.

I think the $60 mil was before the plan to move baseball. Now they STILL say $100 mil total, 50 mill is baseball and who knows for the other projects. Just a guess.

I cant say that Ive seen a number since the plan changed. I don't think we even have a new football plan yet, and they are still making up the proposal requirements.

Completion at the end of 2019. So demolition of McKethan won't start until next summer at the earliest. Football facility likely won't be done until late 2020. Great. It ain't an arms race. It's an arms crawl.

It is far more logical and economical to move track and field.
