Arlington is awesome. I hope to make Normandy some day.

We went to the Flight 93 memorial in Shanksville 11+ years ago, it wasn’t fully completed. The wall of names following the flight path upside down at 563 mph and the rock in the field were the impact happened. Absolutely gut wrenching. Want to get to ground zero one day soon as well.
I went to Ground Zero in NYC in 2003. They still hadn't completed the demolition and there was about 1/3 of about 4 floors below ground level to be removed. From the chain link fence at the site one could view the entire site. There was a very strange feeling that I had, almost spiritual. It was very difficult to stand there looking at it all thinking about all of the innocent lives which were destroyed for no good reason. I do want to go back to view the memorial though.

Generational Memories are being forgotten in this Great Country. I blame the Education System for not Teaching the Lessons of History! Of course Parents have the final responsibility to teach their children but most of them don't know History either. Sad state of affairs.

Same... Ground Zero in that time frame (and even when I went back to the new memorial/square pits) and Arizona Memorial were the two most solemn/emotionally moving places I have ever visited... more so than even concentration camps.

My granddaddy enlisted with the Navy right after Pearl Harbor and spent his time in the New Hebrides. He was 28, married with two young daughters. He always said it was his duty to serve. I have the utmost respect for the men and women of his generation and the sacrifices they made. It is painful to see the nation that turned the tide in the war and did so much for its own citizenry, as well as many abroad, find itself under attack from within by the same ideologies that it defeated in Europe. With God’s Grace and the same resolve we can overcome once more…but will we? It hurts to think in those terms especially after all the sacrifices that began on this day in 1941.

I am losing faith that we can defeat these domestic enemies but I hope I am wrong,

I had an uncle that stormed the beach at Normandy as well as another that fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
Neither ever talked about anything that happened to them until they were in their eighties and even then they chose not to go into any real detail.

Had a good family friend, gone now, that helped liberate Dachau. He never spoke of it, ever, even to his wife and kids.

Visited the Pearl Harbor museum, the Arizona, and the Submariner museum about 5 weeks ago in Hawaii--truly gives one a tremendous appreciation for the events of the day and the tragedies & encourage. May we never forget.

So should we all remember or just those YOU say can honor those for serving?

I'm confused.

So, honoring those who served by those who have not gets a looney by some.

So 99% of America can't honor the 1% that did?

You're not "confused," you're just making this about you and your butthurt. Sadly typical.

There's nothing confusing about honoring those who died on Dec 7th. Whether one served or not.

Might I suggest getting back to honoring those lost on that day instead of perpetuating present grievances? There's plenty of other threads for you to air your butthurt.

So now who is lying?

What's that make you?

Amazing.

No posts.
Went to a memorial today.

My grandfather enlisted right after 12/7/41. A lot like those that enlisted right after 9/11/01.

He was a SeaBee on Guam after getting out of basic.

His brother was a marine that hit the beaches at Normandy.

I don't think any Marines hit the beaches at Normandy. The Army likes to tease the Marines that the largest amphibious assault in history did not include a single Marine.

There were Navy frogmen though.

Can you imagine America doing this today?

I cannot.

I'll have to check with my aunt, the family historian. I could have sworn he was a marine, but he may have been army.

There were a few hundred; but they were mostly in a support capacity and not part of a divisional or battalion-level force on their own.

C’mon man. “As members of ships detachments” ain’t storming beaches.

There’s a reason your meme conflates the two.

You're reading too much into things.
You thought there weren't any there--but that wasn't accurate. No more, no less; and just letting you know, not starting a pissing contest.

Marines were there in a support capacity (to direct naval gunfire, help with landing craft, and some specialists ashore), but that's it. No one said they were "storming beaches."
