Urban Meyer: I don't see any gap between SEC, Big Ten

https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/sec-football/urban-meyer-dont-see-gap-sec-big-ten/

Few coaches have found success in two Power 5 conferences like Urban Meyer did in the SEC and the Big Ten. During his six seasons at Florida (2005-10), Meyer helped launch the SEC’s incredible seven-season run of BCS Championships, winning two himself at Florida. After five years at Ohio State, he now sees the two power conferences as even.

“I don’t think there’s a gap at all,” Meyer said when asked at Big Ten Media Days on Monday. “And that’s no disrespect to other conferences, but I’ve coached in the SEC East when that was one of the strongest in the country. And I think the Big Ten East right now is every bit as strong as I can remember the SEC East.”

With Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State all in the Big Ten East, it’s easy to see why Meyer is reminded of battling for the SEC East title against Georgia and Tennessee. This year, the two conferences clashed in the postseason twice (SEC wins in the Music City Bowl and Outback Bowl), but not in the College Football Playoff. Clemson spoiled any hope for a classic Meyer vs. Nick Saban showdown by knocking off the Buckeyes in the semifinals.

Perhaps the Big Ten media should be asking about a gap with the ACC.

2000's 18 15 0 54.5 25.9 24.6
1990's 16 11 0 59.3 25.1 24.8
1980's 17 5 1 76.1 23.7 19.2

The level of competition in the SEC almost killed him. He ran from it like a puppy with his tail between his legs.

Enjoy playing the power houses at Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Northwestern, Iowa and Purdue Leyer. These schools are worse than anything in the SEC.

Eating cold pizza in the bowels of a Big Ten stadium. You're a long way from Florida buddy. Stressed out up North. Stressed out down South. No gap.

Meyer seems to have selective memory about the relative strength of the SEC East during his reign. I count only six teams besides Florida finishing the year ranked between 2005 and 2010.

But they have a 100 wins over Vandy.

I'm not going to take anything away from those great Florida teams he put together. But there was a major power shift toward the West while he was there to the point where 22nd-ranked South Carolina became the beast of the East in his last season.

I do think the gap has closed between the SEC and the Big Ten. Are they even? I doubt it.

OSU and Michigan are definitely getting the top recruits now but I think most of the other Big Ten teams would really fall apart if they played in the SEC West as the season went on.

Of course they would, esp against the West. Overall, the talent level remains higher in the SEC. I'm not sure the coaching is as good as it was seven or 10 years ago, but top to bottom the rosters are better and deeper in the SEC.

There is no one in the SEC East who could even give OSUx, Meatchicken, or Rape State a game. Sad but true.
