J I normally agree with your take on things but in this case I don't think most NFL teams would have beaten Miami that year. I think we had a fine team that would have won it most years but we were a far 2nd to them IMO.

To further that point I would rank the 01 Miami team, the 95 Nebraska team and our 2008 team as the greastest CFB teams of all time in no particular order.....

09 Bama, hands down. We would have had way too much momentum going into the NC against Texas and curb stomped them for a more recent 4th NC(3 in 4 years)…...It would have also given us that elusive undefeated season and cemented TT as unarguably the greatest CFB of all time without a doubt.

Possibly. But when Rexy played with his hair on fire, we were almost unbeatable. What a fun team to watch.

I chose the 2001 game as well. To this day, I have never taken a football loss harder, (though the 2 week depression I went into after that may have led to a self evaluation that allowing the performance of 18-22 year old athletes on a particular day to effect my outlook on life in general wasn't all that healthy) and disagree that we could not have beaten UM that year. More importantly, I will never forget Spurrier's thoughts after seeing the Gator Nation so disappointed in a 3rd place finish and saying maybe it was time he moved on if 10 wins wasn't good enough , then he did.

That's an interesting POV and one that I didn't consider.....the fallout from SOS leaving was devastating although not nearly as drastic as the Meyer fallout 9 years later.....and yes as Gator J pointed out we would have had a chance against Miami BUT we would have had to played our absolute BEST game of the year. We had some holes on defense against the run in particular(see the Auburn and UT games). Miami had a defense that was on the same level as our 2008 defense( the 2 best in CFB IMO)…..It wouldn't have been a walk in the park for Miami but I think if those teams played 10 times Miami come out on top 7 or 8 times....

Tough to pick, but I'd have to say the '96 Fiesta Bowl. That second quarter was freaking brutal. Losing (or tying) close games is hard, but getting your a$$ handed to you tells you you're not even in the same galaxy as the opposition. Plus it would have been nice to have that be the elusive "unbeaten season".

Good points...in the end though I blame Georgia for that loss, who gave us Jimmy Carter, who allowed radical Islam to take root during the Iran Hostage Crisis, which led to OBL and AQ, which led to the tragedy of 9-11, which led to our original game with UT being cancelled (when we were full strength and they were not), which led to it being rescheduled to the game after the criminal Darnell Dockett intentionally twisted our leading rusher's knee (after the play was over), thus knocking him out for the UT game, which obviously led to our defense forgetting how to tackle Travis Stephens.... ;)

The thing I change happened 1992. We go hire a real AD, not a flunky around the office who sold popcorn and group seating.

Or, you know, the guy who took a relatively low-key athletic program and turned it into a cash cow powerhouse that’s now a national brand.

Sorry, but that is again recidivist history. We OWNED the SEC when he took over, going on our third straight championship or "first in the SEC" (fvkk you Bammer and Ugly) and were set to dominate fornthe decade. He had already had won our first all sports trophies.

                  He didnt build that.

We arent a profitable "national brand" as you say bc of gymnastics and lawn darts, we are profitable national brand bc SOS dominated for a decade and CUM had two good years too.

No, Bucktooth Fooley was the bumbling idiot who slowly stangled one of the top programs in the country into a middle tier Sunbelt team.

But yeah, he made us "profitable" by giving 80-100 million in football money to someone else every year.

Hiring a decent AD long ago who wasnt going to be an absentee slumlord and who wouldnt publicly declare we werent going to compete in football would do far more from the program than changing any single game.

And people act like he's the only AD capable of running the program. There are plenty of successful athletic programs out there and plenty of successful ADs. There are MBA schools pumping out intelligent, smart, creative minds all across the country....but Jeremy Foley was the only one capable of running UF's athletics. Yeah...okay.

80 UGly....so I would never have to see/listen to Munson call that play that I refuse to point out and Ugly would not have won the National Championship that year.

EC, the 85 game was painful. I listened to it on the radio in the East Library. YES, I made it to the library on occasion. The game wasn't on TV because of probation. I think Kerwin threw for over 400 yards, yet we scored only 3 points.

But the 80 game is the most painful since we had the game won and the ramifications were they won a natty and they continued to be in our head until SOS.

Bill Arnsparger, the man who hired SOS leading to a decade of Gator domination, and Kruger, who took us to our first final four.

Please don't act like Fooley didn't inherit the top program in the country.

He did succeed in making us Vandylite or Cowbell lite.

Is it in the red now? The answer is no....and someone else is running it. So, as I previously stated - there are plenty of other ADs out there capable of doing what he did....and I imagine they wouldn't have blown up the football program too.

I don't get the Foley lovers. The football program is broken, busted, rock-bottomed out.......and it's literally his fault. There's no defending him because of the success of minor sports.

The ADs on the west coast have 10 or more sports than we do and they do just fine keeping their programs in the black. The ADs in the Big Ten do the same thing, and field men's hockey, men's soccer, wrestling, woman's field hockey, and many other sports the SEC schools don't field. (i.e. making the ADs job that much more difficult; budgeting, scheduling, hiring the right coaches, etc). But the Foley lovers want to put Foley on a pedestal because the program is in the black financially? I'd rather he go in debt for 5 to 10 years and "get into an arms race" (his words) than go 4-7 and fire our 2nd head football coach in 4 years.

Go ahead....defend that piece of sh*t! DO IT!!!!

I always love how people conveniently forget Foley also hired the guy who won 2/3 of our NCs in football. And spare me the predictable “Bernie Machen” retort. Foley beat out Urban’s self-proclaimed “dream job” for the hire.

And last time I checked, I think there are about 20 total athletic programs at any level in the entire country that turn a profit. That didn’t happen by accident.

Anyway, I’m not sure why I went down this rabbit hole. Bored on my lunch break I guess. Peace.

No championship on the line for the "Choke at Doak," but that game hurt me personally, as I was in attendance with two coaching buddies and to see us go into a prevent and a seemingly insurmountable lead evaporate was about more than I could stand. I still get sick at Nole$ who claim this as a victory (though it did feel like a loss to me personally), not to mention being reminded anytime I see that smug you-know-what Danny Kanell. I think a win in that game might have turned a page for us programmatically in terms of recruiting and perceptively in the eyes of both fans and rivals.

I love SOS for all he did for the program and school on so many levels, but if I have one criticism it was his down play of the importance of the F$U game each year compared with the preparation for the SEC championship game. Just win the next game on the schedule! The game seemed bigger to F$U than it did to him. They're a rival on so many levels and a yapping dog to boot...slap them down!
