What's your best argument against expanding the CFP to eight teams? (Poll!)

What should happen with the College Football Playoff?

  • Leave it the $%@# alone, it's good enough like it is.

  • Keep it at four teams, but change the criteria for getting in.

  • Expand it to 8 teams.

  • Expand it to 16 teams.

  • Eliminate the CFP and go back to #1 vs. #2.

  • Something else, which I will explain it my response.

Simple. The SEC, Big 10, and Big 12 championships had lesser stakes because those 6 teams were going to the playoffs this year win or lose. The conference championship games essentially serve as playoff games naturally. Why do people want to give all of these conference losers a second or third chance in an additional playoff?

For example,I liked that after uga lost to South Carolina that their playoff chances free falled and they needed an SEC championship to have a chance to go. With an 8 team playoff they are in. I don't get why people think they are deserving to play for a national championship. They laid a giant turd against a crap team and got blown out in Atlanta. The 8 team playoff waters down the regular season because a teams like uga get in every year. That's not good for college football.

On your other point, I don't want to get rid of the bowl games, but I agree that there are too many. They should make the minimum requirement seven games instead of six. I think that would make a huge difference.

Well you probably won't agree with this. If it were up to me, the 8 teams would be the 5 P5 conference champions and the 3 at large teams based on a defined formula (not a bunch of voters). Which means computers that can look at an aggregation of data, apply some agreed upon formula, pick the 3 at-large teams.

And the issue was not UGa, it was Bama. After Bama's loss to LSU, seemed like sports show was talking about how Bama would still slide into that 4th spot over a B12 or PAC10 champion. I hate that kind of BS.

Negative goat fcker.

Wait, was there supposed to be a comma after “negative”? Were you accusing him of being a negative goat ******. Or was the “negative” basically saying no, and then calling him a goat ******.

They both imply he has sex with goats, but the other details are critical, and at present, a little sketchy.

It would probably help you some if you knew that Urg's mother, also a midget, is nicknamed "Goat". He takes it pretty hard. She does too.

So are you in favor of reducing the NCAA basketball tournament to a 16-team field instead of 64? After all, how often does one of those Cinderella Stories make it to the ball? What's the point of playing a bunch of extra games when we all can see with our eyes who's going to end up winning?

Not your best work.
Pretty weak actually.

How does that benefit UF? Other than in years we suck we might get an at large bid.

It's funny.
People argue that it weakens the regular season, effectively making it "easier" to get in and play for a title.

You on the other hand are arguing the opposite...you are claiming it makes it harder.

I'll go ahead and take a crack at this. If I had my way, I'd go back to the BCS. I prefer a 2 team playoff verses 4, but I can live with the 4 team format we have today. Going to 8 would be awful.

The college football season is very short. It only lasts 3 months and its basically a single elimination tournament. Over the past 50 years or so there's only been two seasons where more than two major (P5) teams finished undefeated - 2004 (USC, Oklahoma & Auburn) and this year. Most years only one team gets through unscathed.

The fact that winning the national title practically demands perfection produces the greatest regular season in all of sports. Every single game is a must win. This creates an amazing environment every Saturday in the fall. Its why the anticipation for big games is palpable. Its why losing that game is devastating and winning that game is euphoric. Its also why fans excitedly switch over to watch whatever top team is struggling in hopes that they'll get upset, as any loss can't be a death nail.

One loss alone doesn't automatically eliminate a team, but it does mean your going to either need some help or get lucky.

All that excitement, angst, intensity and passion would dramatically decline by going to 8 teams.

Number 8 this year lost 3 games, one in blowout fashion and another to a team that went 6-6. Number 7 played an incredibly weak schedule but still lost twice to the only good team they played. Number 6 also played a weak schedule, lost their only decent non-conference game and then lost to a 7-5 team. Number 5 got blown out when everything was on the line and also lost to a 4-8 team at home. All of these teams had their shots and failed. There's no reason to give them another shot.

This years teams ranked 5 - 8 aren't unusual. Every year the 5th - 8th ranked teams failed at some point during the season. Those teams shouldn't be rewarded, but more importantly, the teams that already beat them shouldn't be forced to do it again.

The games played in Sep, Oct and Nov matter. They shouldn't be dismissed just so casual fans that don't pay attention all year long can have an extended playoff.

Ha! Exactly. He thinks you're not a good Gator fan if you're not scared to play an extra playoff game. :baby:

He also thinks the only ideas worthy of discussion here are those that benefit the Gators alone, to the exclusion of any other teams. I disrespectfully disagree.

Nothing wrong with spitballing about how to make football more fun, as long as it's not something that would negatively impact Florida.

I said at the top of the thread that I like the 8-team playoff because it will make college football less stagnant overall. As a matter of fact it will benefit Florida, albeit not in ways that won't benefit certain other schools, too.

I never said an 8-team playoff would give UF some unique, exclusive advantage. @ThreatMatrix decided that should be the measure of whether it's a good idea, then says I'm moving the goalposts when I don't go along with it. He should go take his friend for a walk and get some air.

First, thanks for your thoughtful contribution to the thread.

I think you're overstating the diminishment of the regular season by an 8-team playoff. Giving every conference champ a bid means that divisional play and conference championship games will be vitally important, from the beginning til the end of the season.

I can envision an SEC season where we beat each other up and both divisional winners come to Atlanta with 2 losses, despite being just as good as any other teams out there.

If those teams are Bama and UF, for example, and the Gators win the SECCG, you don't like the idea of us then going to the CFP? If we then peaked at the right time and went on to win the NC, you'd put a little asterisk by it?

You just made my point for me. By your own admission, your ignoring the 2 losses in the regular season just because you think we're just as good as any other teams that might have gone unbeaten. Sorry, I can't get on board with that. I'd celebrate the hell out of the SEC title in your scenario, but no, a 2 loss team has no business playing for a national title if there are undefeated or 1 loss P5 champs out there. The right time to peak is late Aug through early Jan. Only playing well for a portion of the season doesn't cut it for me.

2 was sometimes not enough, but usually was just fine. 4 was implemented to overcome the uncommon exceptions when 2 was genuinely controversial.

Adding more than 4 would be trying to mitigate whining about exceptions to the exceptions.

It creates more harm than benefit because it would greatly dilute the meaning of the regular season. For example, if every 2-loss SEC school remains in contention, it absolutely takes the pressure off the 2 to 4 elite matchups you play in season. We had to win at least 2 of Auburn, UGLY, and LSU to make the playoff and then another elite game for the SEC title. Each of those games were super intense for Gator Nation and it is high-stakes atmospheres like that that make college football great.

I don’t even watch the NFL until the playoffs. Time much better spent at church or sleeping (or both simultaneously).

But the "undefeated or 1 loss P5 champs out there" would get their opportunities, too. We're talking about an 8-team playoff, remember?

If Florida came into the CFP as a 2-loss SEC champ, then proceeded to beat a couple of undefeated P5 champs on the way to the NC game, you'd seriously feel like those other teams got jobbed and we didn't really deserve to be there? Even though we beat them fair and square on the field?

A 2 loss SEC Champ UF team should hoist the conference trophy, enjoy the Sugar Bowl and look for what additions or changes are needed to take the next step. In short, what Spurrier and Gator fans did for much of the ‘90s.

There’s no entitlement that says the SEC has to have a rep in the playoff. If it somehow cannibalizes itself or sees an implosion in the SECG that costs it a spot, so be it. That team you described would’ve been our 2015 team if we’d pulled the upset in Atl. So one minute we’re taking down FAU in double OT and being shut out at home by the noles, the next week we’re in the playoff with Treon Harris? Yikes.
