I was waiting for a punch line, but it appears that your question is sincere;
Vikings = Norse, Sweden / Norway.
Saxons = Tribes from the North coast of Germany. Together with the Angles, another North coast Germanic tribe, you have "Anglo-Saxon". The Angles gave England its name, Angle-Land. The Angles were fishermen, thus our word "angler". Sussex in England comes from 'south saxons', Essex, Wessex east & west.

Thank you. After watching every season of vikings on the history Channel, this makes sense.

To extend the franchise a bit more, Normandy in France was originally 'North Man Land'. These were Vikings who raped, pillaged and settled along the west coast of France. Even today the people of Normandy look different than their fellow French in the interior...more of that Viking aspect. Rollo was given that part of France and was the first ruler of Normandy as kind of a peace offering to stop waging war on Paris, and it became the land of the North men or Norsemen. I haven't seen the entire Vikings series, so maybe they get into all that. William the Conqueror was Rollo's g-g-g-grandson.

I will see your Saxon battle and raise you a battle for western civilization. October 10th, 732, Battle of Tours. Charles the Hammer tossed the Umayyad Caliphate back to the Iberian Peninsula. His grandson would go on to lead what the Germans would refer to as the Frankenreich - the forerunner of the Holy Roman Empire.

(Obviously ignore the 12th century mail and arming swords - the painter wasn't there to see it - but you get the idea.)

The Ottomans were huge favorites but unknown and unheralded John III Sobieski led a plucky combined Christian squad to a shocking upset victory fueled by a punishing Polish ground game.

They do. Of course they take some great liberties and make Rollo the brother of Ragnar.

nevertheless it's an interesting show and entertaining.
