As a Christian (who is far from perfect), I can't condone this sentiment. However, I can't dispute the reasoning.

Therein lies why I think a few of us are fairly conflicted on the subject: on one hand, it's impolite and poor manners to speak ill of the dead--AND the central issue most of us have with him (blatant hypocrisy and rampant cheating to get ahead) is eminently a human trait that I'm sure many of us are guilty of on some level. But with all that said...all of the negative things that have been said on here about him are true--and while we can all feel empathy about someone losing their life, it's also hard to be fully sympathetic when they had such a mixed legacy.

Absolutely loved playing FSU. Most of the time we totally intimidated/taunted them into screwing up. No other team in the nation has the record of #6 WIDE rights/left kicks to the same team & which subsequently lost the game for them. It got to the point where not only did we expect them to miss, but they expected to miss also. I fully expect to see: "but I had to play Miami" on his gravestone like he said he would do. I also thoroughly enjoyed the UF vs. FSU games, particularly the antics of both coaches. We used to set up a bet. each throwing in $20.to see how many times SOS would throw his headgear on the ground throughout the game. I think his Mom finally admonished him & told him to straighten up. Regardless, these were classic games with outstanding and "colorful" coaches that we probably will not see again in our lifetime - certainly my lifetime anyway. Bobby, may you RIP.

That in and of itself isn't the issue. I doubt few would care that much if that was all it was. What makes us truly loathe the man, apart from him being the HC of a hated rival, was the blatant cheating and aiding/abetting for player lawlessness on and off the field, all while playing the "saint" of college football card decade after decade.

The staggering arrogance of his hypocrisy on display on so many levels is the issue.

I think the word we're both looking for here is "accountability"--specifically, the lack of it, that frustrates many.

As Donk pointed out: beating us isn't the issue bc neither Saban or Fisher inspires the same amount of hatred by Gator Nation, despite both coaches having our number.

Actually, fisher seemed to take a lot of notes while he was hc in waiting.

From the low's of the "Choke at Doak" to the high of "52-20", he is a part of our memories.
RIP Coach Bowden.

I’m thinking the odds of him scoring were a tad higher with Ann than third-string scout team.
I would take third-string scout team at an SEC school any day over getting married at 18.

Too bad the NCAA spared him further humiliation by only vacating his wins rather than forfeiting by turning his wins into actual losses for those dipsh**s cheating on online music courses. Funniest part about it was they still sucked during those cheating years.

I still enjoy to this day pausing this video at the 3:48 mark and extending my middle finger at two genuine pieces of human debris....oh, and **** Bowden too.

Gators vs FSU 1997 game winning drive - YouTube

I probably watch that clip once every few weeks and have for years. It may be the single greatest 15min-ish clip of football ever recorded. Everything from the deep pass, the announcer’s voice cracking on the call, Quez’s famous “pull the straps down” after a big play, the tackle on STs, and of course the pick by an unheralded backup to ice things, is near perfection. It literally never gets old. I even enjoy the “Dr Quinn Medicine Woman” promo.

Steve could not have possibly said less of substance about Bowden (he might as well have said “he was a person. He also breathed and used the bathroom occasionally”) - which says an absolute ton.
That reminds me of the time when a guy i knew who made a living peddling old crapper used cars
to some of the sled lots here in town. The guy was a real low life who would do anything to a car just so he could unload it on some sucker. A good friend of mine who was raised in the same small town as the deceased told me that the guy's wife and son asked if he would stand up at the funeral and say a few kind words. He declined to do so, telling them that he couldn't think of one good thing to say about the guy!

Why?

He cheated at every turn. There were no dirtier teams on the planet. The celebrated late hitting QBs and knocking them out of the game, year and often career with late hits to the knees. One year they were bragging about destroying the knees of like 5 or 6 of the 8 ACC QBs they faced.

It sucks seeing Saban win but his teams dont try to late hit QBs and destroy their knees or other thiggish behaviour. Jimbo's Nulls didnt either. (Maybe the 80s scUM were close but it still seem to be a bad egg or two versus the entire team.)

It was all on Boobie and Andrews. Boobie hired Andrews and kept him year after year.

He told players to commit to us, keep it a secret and sign with Nulls on NSD. Kids may waiver, I get that. They are 17. But Mr Christian "Baptist Minister" instructed them to lie and bragged about it.

Womanizing, his boys learned it from him.

He was a total piece of shtt. Rot in hell.
Excellent eulogy. I was moved.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Yes, as a matter of fact…who do you think orchestrated “The Swindle in the Swamp”? Bowden to the Jack Childress crew before the game…”Now men, I’m sure I don’t need to explain to y’all the importance of this game for us and our conference being in the National Championship picture and what’s good for the ACC is good for y’all’s paychecks.”…..”have a great game, men!”

BASTARD!

This...

BUT what really bothers me as a Christian was that he claimed to be a Christian...HIS hypocrisy made/makes it so hard for those of us who are believers to reach the unbelievers.
