I neglected to give a shout to Sean Kelley. We had a thunder storm roll in about kickoff and I started off listening on the radio. I thought he was good enough that I really didn’t miss Mick, whom I loved, as much as I thought. Listened to his call on the INT and thought it was like he’d been there for a long time. Heck, Shane didn’t seem too bad either!

I saw Cox miss containment badly on one play where Rising went for like 20+ yards. He was out of control on that play, biting hard to the RB. Not sure if it was a one-off relapse or he is still having issues like last season.

As someone said, it aint Sunday morning coffee with C2's Bits and Pieces thread.

Spot on as usual.

My observations:
  • AR is the man and looks like he is getting solid coaching.
  • O-line looked better than it has in years.
  • While the defense got pushed around, they were more disciplined. Did we even have any defensive penalties?
  • I got frustrated a couple of times when some of our defensive players were trying to hype up the crowd while the Utes were lining up to run a play. "Turn your blooming head and look at what your opponent is doing!"
  • Game management and play calling were the 2 open questions. I'm not especially wowed by the play calling and I'm not sure what was going on with 41 seconds and 2 timeouts at the end of the first half. But overall, I liked the product that I saw on the field and have way more trust in this staff than the previous three.

Our defense is probably going to be tough to watch with problems from the past, some have been mentioned:
  1. Depth
  2. Tackling beyond LOS
  3. God bless his effort, but Cox over pursuing/not holding his edge.
  4. Not getting lined up quickly/looking to sideline. There was a stretch where Utah was going hurry up that really scared me. We ended up holding at the goal line in the north end with that drive, but I feel like they coulda "hurry up'd" to two more scores.

Isn't that where the refs said change the clock to 30 something seconds and then dropped another 10 seconds basically penalizing us when the Ute player got hurt?

Our fellow Ute fan said stadiums out in Montana and Wyoming were louder and he was unimpressed. Was it loud?
Florida has bigger stadiums at the high schools and ucf. Those big sky schools can only compare favorablely to duh ewe. That guy is full of crap.

Cox is who he is at this point. He’s a pass rush specialist and they stonewalled him all night when it came to getting his hands on Rising. I know everyone complains about the tackling, and rightfully so, but it’s very hard to erase years of bad habits in one offseason. Toney and Co have their work cut out for them in that regard.

Also, I have to mention Trey Dean. Him running down Rising on that long run and making that tackle out of bounds wouldn’t have happened in years past.

I do not remember seeing Cox take any plays of last night. First time I have ever thought that about him. He was around the ball alot.

I'll rewatch the game when I get home, but can someone tell me why the refs added all that time to the clock after the long QB run?

Yes. But the rules say it would be our option on running time off. Not sure if BN was okay with that or if it was another example of bad officiating and BN didn't catch it?

First half d was very good . Can’t fault our guys for the first score . Good teams are always going to make you pay for the short field and the Utes are a very good team . Miller was very good . The hit on Thomas at the goal line was an obvious difference maker . McClellan, Kamari and Shemar all got significant reps .
This group should improve throughout the year .

Kind of bland but effective on offense . I wonder what the 2 minute O would’ve looked had we just a little more on the clock before half . Etienne looks like a player . Though the fumble that he pounced on during the last drive was a near catastrophe. Great win and start to the season .

Did we ever get an explanation for Utah getting a fourth timeout in the deciding moments of the ****in game?

Or the idiotic ten second runoff before halftime ?

Or the 4th down play that was stopped after the incompletion?

There was a lot of nonsense I couldn’t deal with . Probably why I couldn’t do this for a living without suffering a heart attack before even hitting 40.

Nice to see a freaking running game. Fingers crossed we sustain it.
OL looked better after a few yips, but AR clearly had to use his Houdini skills a few times.
WR? Maybe use backs more, lol, to rest P.
WR/bubble screens seem to burst not pop.
To me AR is the most dangerous on pass plays that aren’t there, his speed kills vs containment. AR definitely settled down as the game went forward. Excited to see his progress without a whisperer.
Miller, can we clone him?
No receivers running passed our db! TE we won’t talk about.
DL and linebackers will be interesting.
Tackling? Too much celebration after finally making one.
Think we stayed vanilla on D because they lose all containment with stunts. Things that give me bad flashbacks, lots of blitzes from way outside and sideways :naughty:

Man, from ready to smash the ipad to smiling having a cocktail on the dock in 2 seconds. What a ride.
Do we have a meme of the Ute coach with a mower blade in his head

The extra timeout, I believe, was explained that a previous TO really wasn’t charged because a player’s helmet came off and play was stopped. Sounds fishy, but regardless that rule is pretty dumb imo and continues to be used to try and gain advantage. Reference was made at the end of the Arky / Cincinnati game when the trailing Bearcats’ helmets seemed to be inexplicably coming off in the waning seconds.
