Okay, well he responded to my comment in an email. Here it is:
As underwhelmed as I am by this staff so far, they are clearly moving in the right direction on the DL.
Gone or soon to be gone are many of the 3rd & long pass rush specialists:
Cox
Chief Borders,
David Reese (#4),
Lloyd Summerall
From the Gator Country article:
This leaves Antwuan Powell-Ryland and Jack Pyburn as the only two left at the position. Powell-Ryland took over as the starter when Brenton Cox... (dismissed)
Probably no coincidence that these two are 20 pounds bigger than the rest too, although Pyburn is VERY raw at this point. Remember he was a middle linebacker last year. (So was Chief. I feel terrible for him but I guess he should have hit the weight room when they said you are moving to DL.)
Princely is probably questionable in this list too, though it would surprise me if he moves back to Weakside/ Rush depending on whether we stay 3 or 4 man front. 245 won't do. He better find the weight room this offseason, if he isn't forced out. Wouldn't surprise me if he goes wherever his lil brother goes, who I don't believe is being recruited by us at all.
Note: Grantham claimed to play a 3-4 but really it was a 4-3. The rush almost always rushed and played the edge like the WDE would, hand in the dirt in a DL stance.
Billy & Toney historically has played 3 big DL and a true OLB, with either of the 2 OLB blitzing or dropping into coverage somewhat randomly. Obviously none of our blitzbackers are capable in coverage so they have mostly blitzed this year. I won't be surprised if personnel caused that change in Toney's philosophy and we change back with more of a true OLB in the future with flexible fronts.
Back to "Donkey likes big butts" and so does Billy, there are no collection of 220 pound edge hybrids in this class:
Will Norman 6-5 290
Isaiah Nixon 6-5 225
Gavin Hill 6-4 260
TJ Searcy 6-5 250
Kelby Collins 6-5 258
Kamran James 6-6 265
Other than Nixon, there aren't any Grantham-sized kids. And to be clear, I'm ok with one or two of those guys on the roster, but not 10-12. The rest can add an easy 20 pounds and be at great SEC playing size.
Also note that the coaches are still hunting other big butts for the 2023 recruiting class and are looking for transfers too.
No matter what she told you, size always matters. Those bitches lied to Grantham.
