He's from a one off conference...you have to win the conference tourney to get the automatic bid. He's basically 0-3 as the 1 seed in conference tourney play.

You can win the regular season conference title and not win the conference tournament and miss the dance. Especially smaller conferences with only one automatic bid. I know you don't follow basketball, but that's how the tournament works.
Some of you wanted a quick hire. You got your wish. Just Monday, Foley cautioned against expecting a quick move. "The key would be to have something in place I would think sometime in June," he said, adding, "I haven’t talked to one coach. I [haven’t] had time to do that."

Boom. In a matter 48 hours, 60 tops, he found his man. Need I remind what we got the last time he arrived at a warpspeed decision. I truly hope history doesn't repeat. White wasn't just on Foley's radar, he's generally regarded as a bright young star in college basketball circles. He recruits well and has significant Florida ties (he grew up just a few miles from here in Pinellas), and he'll likely rattle the cages, which honestly is what we need. Maybe lightning strikes twice. I sure hope.
This hire needed to happen fast with recruiting season getting ready to crank up. He's still got to get a staff and support staff to attend all these aau tourneys. I could be wrong but there's a big one on memorial day weekend they we will need him to attend.

I was kind of being snarky.

And reminding everyone why hate the tournaments and the fact that the regular season doesn't matter.

I'm not as concerned with the fact that he hasn't gotten his team to the tournament. When you're in a conference like that and the only way you can make it is a one and done conference tourney, sh*t happens. Hell, even Billy only won the SEC Tourney like what, 5 times in 19 years? It's extremely difficult to do. What concerns me is when we make the tournament, his inexperience could hurt us trying to advance.

I will say that winning consistently at a basketball program like LA Tech is impressive, and for that reason I'm more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Wish Shaka hadn't jumped at that Texas job, but what can you do?

Not the kind of hire I was hoping for.

I predict famine and double digit losses.....

How the hell do you not get in the tournament....They only take 64 teams. If you have a pulse you should get into the tournament...

Well you're a dumbass so I'll make this simple.

Louisiana Tech is in the Conference USA. C-USA only ever gets one automatic bid to the tournament and no at-larges (not since teams like Memphis, Marquette, Cincinnati, and Louisville jumped ship). They went 15-3 in conference and won the regular season title last year, but since the NCAA has an idiotic rule that says only the conference tournament winner gets the automatic bid, they didn't make the tournament when a red hot UAB team took them out in overtime in the conference tourney (the same UAB team that beat Iowa St. in the Dance).

The year before, they lost to the #2 seed Tulsa in the conference tourney final. They would make it to the NIT Quarterfinals, beating UGA along the way before narrowly losing to FSU.

LA Tech was also a program that had only had three winning records in the ten previous seasons before White got there, and had only made the NIT once. They hadn't won a regular season championship since 1999. White had a winning season every year he was there and made the NIT three out of four years. I think that kind of improvement is something that commands a modicum of respect.

I say to wait and see what the new guy does here before we burn him at the stake. I know, I know... dare to dream right? He's definitely going to have his work cut out for him here.

I agree. I wouldn't have hired him without seeing if Miller or Mack were interested but hey! I don't have access to Dooleysuck's money. First test will be passing the recruits' smell...who stays firms; who doesn't.

In the big scheme of things, I'm patient and will root for White to succeed. Billy Donovan was 13-17 and 14-15 his first two seasons and 15-16 his last. Who know? He might be a breath of fresh air.

This hire really puts our program in perspective. We are not an elite basketball school.

Would MSU hire Mike White to replace Tom Izzo? Would Kentucky hire him to replace Cal? Duke is a no go because of nepotism. Would he replace Thad Motta at OSU? Would he replace Bill Self at Kansas? Boeheim at Syracuse? My opinion is no.

Yes there were SEC teams interested in him. We know he's had offers from the Vols and Mizzou, while Bama turned him down for Avery. But none of them are elite, either.

So why is he replacing Billy Donovan? The powers that be do not view UF BB as elite. This is about trying to catch lightning in a bottle again with a Billy D look a like on the cheap to save 2 mil a year.

As a Gator fan, I hope he exceeds the wildest expectations. And as a Gator fan, I believe we could have done much better with Miller, Mack, or Marshall had our AD viewed UF BB as elite.

As dumb as I may be I'm no longer blinded by my Foley love. How much longer will some of you walk around in his love cloud?
BTW your explanation still sucks as much as any teams that don't make the tournament, or perhaps you'll be happy being the 68th best team in the country:woohoo: .......If a selection committee made up of college BB experts don't think this guys teams are good enough to get into the tournament then perhaps Foley should use that information as part of his determining factor for hiring another coach since his own judgment is usually wrong over the last 6 or 8 years.

How has he "sh!t the bed" already when you have not even seen if this coach will be successful here?
