If you're as old as I am, you're finding the irony in this kind of delicious. The Bowden-led FSU of the late '70s and early '80s was almost recklessly fearless in its independent scheduling, arranging dates with teams like Pitt (they were good back then), Nebraska, LSU, Notre Dame and even Ohio State. They met Oklahoma in a few bowl matchups. Gradually, the wins against giants began piling up and the program began getting lots of notice.
By the time Spurrier arrived at UF it was assumed FSU was just biding time for an SEC invite. When Bowden passed, citing the desire to avoid the more difficult conference schedule, it raised more than a few eyebrows. Now here it is three decades later and the FSU he helped raise from the ashes through fearlessness is paying the price for being a big fat ACC wus. Live by it, die from it.
