The Gators will be adding former Utah quarterback and Houston offensive coordinator
Brian Johnson to the offensive staff, the team announced on Sunday afternoon. Florida has yet to announce coordinator roles on the offensive side of the ball, though
Billy Gonzales and
John Hevesy served as co-coordinators while at Mississippi State under Mullen.
Johnson threw for 7,853 yards and 57 touchdowns as a college player from 2004-08 and was featured on the cover of EA Sports' NCAA Football 2010 video game. He was the Sugar Bowl MVP in Utah's 31-17 win over Alabama in 2008.
He began his coaching career as a quarterbacks coach at Utah in 2010 before rising to be the offensive coordinator for the Utes from 2012-13.
He then moved to Mississippi State, joining Mullen's staff as quarterbacks coach in 2014 and staying three years on staff in Starkville. He took the Houston offensive coordinator job in 2017.
At just age 30, he's now on staff at one of the nation's premier programs. Considered one of the most up-and-coming coaches in the nation, Johnson should bring another innovative and hungry offensive mind to Gainesville.
