Reminded me of another Gainesville/Ocala former player arrest. Rick Tuten, no relation to the former Gator S&C coach, got busted as part of a fencing ring.

Their parents werent. I can see negative recruiting. "UF had great academics and have put a bunch in the NFL. But, some of the players and staff your son will be around could beban issue. Hernandez, Leak, Grow, Mathews, Babbit ... Bad people"These kids were in elementary school when Hernandez played here.

Meyer? Matthews was recruited by Galen Hall (I think), Grow by Spurrier, Leak by Zook, etc.Ok, Meyer.
You have O&B blinders on. The kids care about w-l, facilities etc. Momma cares about academics and the type of people they'll be hanging around.Meyer? Matthews was recruited by Galen Hall (I think), Grow by Spurrier, Leak by Zook, etc.
You made a silly point. Miami is the king of "Thug U" and they aren't having any problems recruiting. People don't care what happened 10, 20, and damn near 30 years ago (when it comes to Matthews).
The REAL negative recruiting is "see how friggin awful their offense has been for 7 years? Do you really want to be a part of that?"

In the news : Hernandez, Mathews, Grow, Babbit, Credit Card Fraud...
Maybe your right ... parents of recruits don't care about those things.
Sad state of affairs if you ask me.
OH, almost guys forgot Corrine Brown.
Recent news cycle folks. Im not talking about when they played.Yep. USCw not getting players because of OJ. Ohio State having issues because of Jeffrey Dahmer. It’s an epidemic.
Btw ... A quick reference to Pedo U would stop my argument real quick. I don't understand how any parent would let their kid play football there.Recent news cycle folks. Im not talking about when they played.
Dahmer was a scholarship football player at ObooHoo St. ? I didn't know that.
Monte Grow is a bad human. He just is. I have zero sympathy for him. I also suspect there were other bad actors involved. I can't believe Monte was smart enough to come up with this scheme on his own. It was a bad scheme, but I'm pretty sure it was well beyond Monte's mental capacities. I'm fine with him in the federal pen for a good long while.
I've met Shane several times. He always struck me as a decent guy. It's hard for me to believe he was more involved in this than he's letting on. He's pleading to the federal equivalent of a misdemeanor (punishable by up to a year) as opposed to the federal equivalent of a felony. That means when he's done with his time, he will still be able to get a decent job, vote, own a gun, etc.
The Feds don't give sweetheart deals to bad guys. They're good at what they do (well, unless they are investigating a Clinton). By the time they charge the case, it's already a done deal. They've got you. It's just a matter of what kind of plea deal they offer you. Remember Michael Vick? Everybody was talking about how no jury would convict him? If OJ got off on murder, Vick was surely going to walk for dogfighting? Ray Lewis walked too, right? Well, I said back then the state charges didn't matter but the federal charges were going to stick. Like Vick, this was a federal case. The Feds know what happened here. They know who they want to hammer. If they agreed to let Shane plea to a "misdemeanor" and a couple of months, his involvement was not significant. I wonder if the plea deal allows for a withhold of adjudication instead of a conviction? That would make the deal a little sweeter.
Alex.
I have a feeling if he made over 400k in that little time on this he knew Grow was clearly doing some illegal stuff. The Feds give out sweet deals all the time to the smaller dogs in a case. Heck it seems to me they are quicker to do it than many state attorneys.
Not saying Matthews is some horrible person but I have a feeling he clearly knew a scam was taking place.

Anyone who says someone will attempt, much less succeed, in using the Matthews conviction to negative recruit is just talking to have something to say.Meyer? Matthews was recruited by Galen Hall (I think), Grow by Spurrier, Leak by Zook, etc.

Those heroin users are former oxy users who got hooked by their doctors and the pharmaceutical companies/distributors wrongly telling the doctors oxy was non-addictive and then backing that with millions in marketing, etc. Greedy doctors writing more prescriptions than there were people in their towns didn't help either. That's why those companies have paid hundreds of millions in fines (although that's pretty much a drop in the bucket for them). Its bullshyt, spawned by ambulance chasers and people (politicians) trying to divert attention from the real problem, Mexican drug cartels slinging heroin and fentanyl on every street corner.
If you talk to cops, paramedics, or er personnel, its all heroin causing the ODs. Its dirt cheap, less than crack, only slightly more than marijuana. Pills are pricey.
A big thing right now are fentanyl getting pressed into pills. Many of the pill deaths are those.
Are there pill mills? Yes, but it isnt even close to one of the primary problems. The majority of the pills come from China or Canada, not US doctors or pharmacies.
